First you need to check if the hardware is compatible. A computer that is running that old of Windows will most likely not run Vista. Do a search for a program that will tell you if you can install Vista. The hardware requirements are crazy, for example, you need 1 GB of ram.

If you can install it then you will need to reformat the hard disk. This will however take everything off your hard drive. What I would do is :
Get a external hard drive
Backup all important documents
Insert Vista Cd
Follow instructions.

As I recall, I'm not sure if you can even use the recovery CD that comes with the new laptop. I'm sure I'll get flamed, but I believe that the CD is only for the laptop. I'm not sure, so don't hold that against me, it's just an idea.

Hope this helps.

*Edit:

You may have to set up BIOS to boot from the cd. This varies from computer to computer. Remember, Google is your best friend.

If this computer had Windows ME on it, chances are it will be almost 5-6 years old, putting Vista on it (If it can take it that is), would be like carrying a tank on top of a truck, you would simply crush it to death.

Vista has a very high hardware requirement, even computers 2-3 years old have problems running Vista with enough speed.

I would advice you to first check the minimum requirement on Vista befor eyou even do a thing.

Paying $200 for a copy of Vista then to find it wont work, and with no option to move it to anoter machine, you are really wasting time and money

ok who ever gave u that tip is totally wrong , first off u need to check if ur pc cuts it with the hardware requirements then anfter that u do need a dvd rom to install that vista since is a dvd-rom cd , and then all u have to do is insert the dvd and restart ur pc , then at boot up it will read CLICK ANY BUTTON TO INSTALL FROM CD DVD , or something similar to that , now if it dosent then u need to chage ur bios , for some pc's F1 , F2 , DELETE , F12 , are the buttons that u need to check wich is the one that logs u in to the bios mode , then after u are in then look for the BOOT tab and open it , then change the setting and set cd or dvd rom to first boot , save and exit , and now the boot screen will read the cd and the installation will start , ONHE IMPORTANT THING save all of you pics music and what ever u want to save , the installation will wipe out ur hard drive !!

If you have nothing important on your Windows ME, then you can do a fresh install. Put the Vista CD onto the cd/dvd drive. Select boot from CD when it is loading. Follow the instructions from CD to install.

Very much doubt that a computer which must be several years old would be capable of running Vista
