Well we all get sleepy to some extent after we eat this is because ...... when we eat food lot of energy is required by our digestive system to process the food , so the digestive system needs a lot of blood supply . In order to supply this excess blood supply , food trigger the brain to activate what is called the "parasympathetic" nervous system , which is just a bunch of nerves supplying various part of our body like our heart some blood vessels especially that of our digestive tract and to the brain .

When this nervous system gets activated it brings the body to a rest and a eventual food processing machine , it lowers the heart rate , reduces the breathing rate , reduces the blood supple to heart , brain and muscles and sends all the blood to the vessels which supply the digestive tract .

This process necessarily works better if we sleep since then other parts of our body like our muscles will not need blood , hence a part our brain called " reticular activating system"(RAS) which controls wakefullness is supressed according to the carbohydrate level in the blood , higher the carbohydrate level greater the supression of this reticular system , and hence we feel sleepy .

As u have read this RAS is supressed only to carbohydrates , people who eat food which are high in carbohydrates like rice and potatoes , tend to feel more sleepy than people who eat just mutton and pork which contain more protein .

More this RAS supression is different for different people which has not been properly studied by physiologists so these differences could also be the answer to your question .

improperly designed meals that are either too high in processed carbohydrates with an insufficient amount of fiber and protein or generally too high in calories. also when people skip meals and the body is hypoglycemic state consuming a regular sized meal (calorie wise) can also cause insulin to spike resulting in feeling sleep and lethargic after feeding.
