I am graduating from college at the end of the month and this is when my parents medical/health insurance stops covering me. What are ideas for people like me after graduation? I would hope to find a job with benefits, but it's still not a gaurantee. Let me know if you guys have any ideas.

You might see if they have any student or interim insurance offered at your college - something that would be reasonably priced and you could maintain for several months until you get a job with benefits.

I am assuming you are healthy, and are not taking any meds on a regular basis. I suggest purchasing a short term medical policy. The premiums are low, and it is major medical insurance. Deductibles vary from usually $500 to $5000, depending on the company. Hopefully, you will find a job that offers benefits. But if you don't, this will buy you some time to make an educated decision without having to spend a lot of money for it. You can normally renew the policy one time, and you take if for a one month to a 6 month period - but that varies from company to company.

If you are a generally healthy person, look for a plan with high deductables, just "Major Medical" so you are covered in case something really bad happens... then once you get a good job you will be covered with a traditional health plan.

Plans vary by state, so it's hard to recommend one.

When your parents coverage stops you have a right to continue coverage for a cost. If you don't yet have a job lined up then I would look into the cost of this until you have landed a job with benefits. Even when you get that job it may be a few months before your coverage starts so you will want to keep this coverage until your new coverage is in effect.

There are companies (for instance, I know BlueCross/ BlueShield does) that will sell ins independently. Call a main '800' phone number and talk to customer service...but be prepared with your credit card, it isn't cheap!
