There are 29+ states that have declared English as the official language. My state doesn't have one yet but it will be English. New Mexico has two,English and Spanish. California and Arizona both have English as their official state language.
Many states have bills on the floor to make English the language of that state.

When did they try to make English this country's official language.? This issue has never come to a national vote of the people.Did you know that German almost became the language of the US government back when we became a nation. And that they wanted the turkey as our national bird but it lost out to the eagle.

Most states do have an official language(s) on their books while others don't. Only Hawaii (English & Hawaiian), Louisiana (English & French) and New Mexico (English & Spanish) have two official languages. Other such as Florida have English as their official language on paper, however this is just lip service, and really hasn't affected the use of other languages such as Spanish and Haitian Creole on state ballots, labor-related literature, and other government publications.
