Not to be rude, but you obviously have no knowledge on law at all. First off, not all lawyers are defense lawyers. Some lawyers are also the ones who put those horrible people in jail, so I'm sure they sleep just fine.
Other lawyers might not even ever work in a court at all. My uncle is a real estate lawyer for large corporations and he almost never goes to court. That's besides the fact that there really isn't a good or bad side in real estate law; it's just figuring out what is good for the city and all that beauricratic paper work stuff.
Then, as for those lawyers who do defend criminals. What do you think our constitution says. It says everyone gets a fair trial and will be defended in court no matter what. So, really that just means that these defense lawyers are just better than the prosecuting lawyers. If your really so angry about it, why didn't you just become a criminal prosecution lawyer. That's what's so great about this country, if you don't like something, you can go out and fix it.
Just some food for thought from a 16 year old!

What an idiotic thing to believe. Ok, maybe not about Ad Men. :) But you should rethink your views on Lawyers. Sure, as in any broad class of people, there are going to be some 'bad apples'. But you are failing to see Lawyers serve a vital role in ensuring that we everyone gets a fair trial. Yes, some guilty people go free, and in some cases this is due to the fact that clever Laywer made clever arguments that fooled a jury. But the jury had a greater share of the blame, since they are the ones that actually made the decision to declare not guilty. And without this kind of legal system, innocent people could be jailed simply because they were accused of a crime and didn't have an adequate defense.
I know several public defenders, and they are all universally very decent people.

Wow. As an atheist, no, if I was that kind of lawyer I would not be able to sleep at night. And oddly enough, I feel this way despite not having a god to be afraid of.
That said, there are Christian lawyers out there who do the same thing all the time.
And not all lawyers are "bad" anyway. What about the prosecutors who put away the child molestors and rapists? What about the lawyers who defend innocent people?
And doesn't claming that an entire group of indivuduals should be "castrated at birth and drowned" make you "fearful upon" your very unwarranted and unjustified assumptions.
Judge not lest ye be judged.

Lawyers don't free child abusers and rapists, juries do when prosecutors fail to prove the case.
Or are you saying that every single person that is ever arrested is guilty? In which case why do we have courts and trials and defence lawyers?
Every person is innocent until PROVEN guilty... those who are not proven guilty were always innocent in the eyes of the law.
[and to answer the person below, in the UK at least if a lawyer KNOWS that a person is guilty then they are not permitted to represent them]
My wife used to act as a defence lawyer and acted in a number of child abuse cases. Her principle always was that unless an accused person has a defence lawyer (if they want one) they cannot be tried in a court of law. If they cannot be tried then the guilty ones cannot be convicted.
She acted in several cases where it was found that the "victim" had made the whole story up for one reason or another.
Bill Hicks was obviously as clueless as you - what's the point of castrating someone if you're going to drown them immediately afterwards?

Not all lawyers defend child rapists. Those are defense attorneys like Johnny Cochran who have specialized in that. Many are prosecutors that work for the government and catch bad people. Many are corporate lawyers who help businesses and handle mergers. There are lawyers in humanitarian rights that deal with injustices and helping people who have been wronged. Most lawyers are Christians not Atheists because in the end we're all human we put aside religion in order to gain money or power.

Do you remember the judge that let Terry Schiavo die? He was a Christian that went to church every Sunday. From all reports people said he was a good man. After he made that decision his congregation told him not to return. They said he had gone against God's laws.
When he was sworn in as a judge he took an oath to represent and interpret that law as accurately as possible, not how he thinks the law should be. Personally he thought it was wrong to let her die, but legally he knew it had to be done.
This applies to lawyers. Personally they may believe someone is guilty and that they should be punished, but they know the law shouldn't be manipulated in order to achieve that. It is important to preserve the rights of the innocent. I would rather have 100 guilty men go free than one innocent man be put in jail. Similarly, I would rather preserve our rights to the utmost than to cut corners to get a conviction. There are reasons these laws and rights are in place.
Defense lawyers are doing society a benefit to take on the burden of defending someone who may not be innocent in order to protect all of our rights and make the system work. They get paid enough though, so I won't be sending anybody thank you flowers.

No lawyer frees anyone. That is done by a judge or a jury. If they acquit someone, no matter what they were ACCUSED of it means that in the eyes of the law they were innocent. Better to let 10 guilty men go free than 1 innocent be locked up.

The field of law is kinda like the field or paleontology, to find a honest man in it would indeed be a rare thing.
I once heard that if you could take all the lawyers in the world, and lay them down end to end around the equator--------
that we would all be better off.

If they get them freed then in the eyes of the law they're not a child abuser or rapist. Just because you're in court doesn't mean you're guilty.
