Yes, it is hard, you have to work at it. Most of my friends are other Officers, but I have a few that are not. Police have similar attitudes, and it is just easier to be around others that share the same views, and know what Police work is about. Not to mention odd working hours during midwatch and dogwatch. I used to work midwatch (1600-0200 hours), and I kept the same hours even on off days. Who else wants to do something on a Monday night at 0100 hours in the morning? Other Cops who keep the same hours.

We also have a warped sense of humor and a slight askew view of the world. Birds of a feather flock together.

People in Law Enforcement tend to have a somewhat higher divorce rate than the general populace, but if the 2 people involved know what they are going into...No. If you are talking about finding the time to go out to socialize then the answer is no. It's like any other job. There is always time off to play with.

The answer is a resounding YES! Between the odd shifts with the odd days off, forced overtime on days off, making arrests with an antiquated criminal justice system, it's a wonder cops have any friends @ all.

Cops have to change their way of living, you can no longer hang out with people you used (especially if they are convictef felons or if you know they're always up to no good). You have to be wary of your surroundings always.

Also, sometimes, depending on the nature of your assignment (narcotics immediately comes to mind), you often have a chance to see the dregs of society of close & personal. You don't always deal with very nice people, you're seeing people @ their worst, when emotions have overcome common sense and violence has erupted. Many times, you will have to deal with seeing dead bodies, both long term and freshly killed.

All of this creates slight nuances in a police officer and what he/she wants to do when they are off duty. Also many cops tend to see things as "them" (meaning all civilains) and "us" (meaning all cops).

Yes it is. A job in law enforcement changes who you are. You become jaded to all the horrible things you see. Many become absolute arseholes because of their job experiences (of course, the officer him/herself doesn't see it, but ask the spouse and friends)
Hours are difficult... different shifts, different days off, working odd hours, working holidays, etc.

It's difficult but can be done.

it can just depend, often some people do not want to be with police officers, but in general you normally end up being with other officers, but I doubt if this is alot different than the factory worker who ends up hanging with other workers when they are off

Yeah because so many people are breaking the law and it is best to avoid contact with them or they'll expect special treatment. Also you may be involved in criminal activity if you are with well criminals and jail time is worse for cops.
