They were dark and had 2 blades, but not in the front and back like chinooks. They were spaced far apart, one above the other. This was their formation....

Any ideas? They flew right over my home, very close to the ground and shook my whole house.

not a V-22 Osprey or a UN black helicopter. rotors were above and below each other, not side by side or front and back. There was a good distance between the rotors. One closer to the body of the helicopter and the other up higher above it. Closest Air Force Base or other military base is at least 3 hours from where I live.

sorry... I didn't mean 2 blades, it was 2 rotor heads. I just didn't know it was called that. :o)

I dunno why they are flying over my house. I live in a rural are in the US.

The closest thing I've found was this ... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Kamow_Ka-25.jpg

It is very similar. The difference was that the ones flying over my house were a darker color and they also had this long thing that stuck straight out of the front of them. I dunno if it was supposed to be a gun or what?

Just curious what they were. I've never seen a helicopter like these before.

Two rotors, one above the other?? The only choppers I know of with that design are Russian Kamovs (see links). The US has captured or purchased some Soviet equipment, and the Russians aren't shy about selling stuff on the open market, so they might have been US operated Russian helicopters, or privately owned Russian choppers, but both of those seem rather farfetched. You've really got me curious now as to what those choppers were.

Could have been V-22 Ospreys on a landing approach. What's the closest military installation to you house?

And those two rotors - were they side by side? Since you said they weren't front and back like CH-47 Chinooks?

EDIT: So you're talking coax rotors: Check this page out then: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kamov

Kamov makes those, though what you saw could be an experimental design from Sikorsky et al, like so: http://www.sikorsky.com/details/0,3036,CLI1_DIV69_ETI2088,00.html

As you'll see when you hit the link right above, you'll see the Sikorsky X2. I didn't hear of any experimental models though.

Any aviation companies close by within a couple of hours drive?

? two bladed or Two rotor-heads ? Just not enough information here

The only recent contra-rotating birds I know of are the Soviet Helix, Hokum, and Havoc. I know the Russians are more than happy to sell the old Helix if you have the cash.

Long ago, Kaman Aviation had a counter-rotating bird (HH-43 Huskie... but they were side-by-side rotors.

House shakers would be CH-53 or CH-47

V22's if they where side by side. are you near Andrews AFB? they where up the last three days. Although there is a russian helicopter that has two rotors mounted on the same shaft. this is closer to what you described, but we don't fly russian army aircraft here. Are you in Alaska?

Now, I don't really know my 'copters, but if you're in a rural area, maybe they're the pot-detecting kind.
I used to work at an herb farm (a completely legitimate business) and we had those black 'copters hovering over our greenhouses on many occasions. We used to love to flip them off from our vantage points beneath them. Can you spell "harrassment"?

you're thinking of a helo with a coaxial rotor system in which two rotors spin, one on top of another, in opposite directions. this eliminates the need for a tail rotor, but it is rather costly in maitenance. that's oddc; i didn't think the US had any; the Soviets were the ones who used them.

Not US military. The Russians use that design a lot. Did they look like this?
