You can sometimes find quality dogs (papers included) in purebred rescues. Keep in mind, that many shelters & rescues alter their dogs, before adopting them out, which disqualifies them from the main dog shows (dogs have to be intact).

If you get a dog that appears to be a pure bred dog is can get an ILP through the AKC. You can then show in all AKC activities others than conformation. This would include: Junior showmanship, Obedience, Rally Obedience, Agility, Tracking, and hunting or herding trial depending on the breed.
In order to get an ILP you have to have the dog neutered, and send pictures to the AKC along the the application form.
Many people find that they enjoy Rally and Agility much more than the conformation ring anyway - as the training for these activities helps to cement the bond you have with your dog.

Sorry, but the other posters are correct - you can't show a neutered dog that isn't registered with the AKC (and you can't register without the papers from each parent dog.) You CAN enter in agility or obedience trials though - i would look into that! And yes, shelters DO get purebred dogs - most dogs in there are puppy mill dogs (pet store dogs) or BYB dogs, and the CAN be purebred (a lot of the time they are BYB mutts or "designer dogs".) Only you wouldn't know because they don't come with their papers most of the time.... and no papers means "mutt."

You can't show an ILP # dog in a specialty or in any conformation classes. An ILP dog can only be shown in performance events such as obedience, rally, field/hunt trials, etc.

I say a Heinz 57 makes a better dog then a papered one :) but either will do. The one rescued needs a home more than the one that cost more from a breeder, as long as it is papered. You can show any dog as long as it meets show requirements, whether it was rescued or bought from a breeder.
