If you have been told that you need hip replacement surgery, you probably need it. If bone is rubbing on bone and the hip socket or ball joint has deteriorated to the point where the hip will not stay in place, then you need surgery. If the hip has not deteriorated, then you may be able to get by with medications and physical therapy. Only you know how much pain you are in and how difficult it is to walk.

Physical therapy may help --- for awhile. And any exercise that you can manage is a good thing.
Taking glucosamine supplements have been thought to help but a recent study now shows that they are ineffective.
I understand your wish to avoid the surgical cure but the reality is that it really works while the so-called "alternative" treatments can be a waste of your time and your money. I know -- I spent 10 years wishing that there was some way I could heal my hips without having surgery. I did the physical therapy routine and took glucosamine (that stuff's expensive), and lived on NSAIDS. I finally got the message when I could no longer walk without a cane. I now have both hips replaced and I am a totally different person. I was scared to death of the surgery since I had never even been a patient in a hospital.
Trust me. It really does work. When you get to the point that your quality of life suffers because of your bad hip, you'll know it's time. Get yourself a really good surgeon whom you trust and who has done a lot of hips on people like you. You'll be glad you did. It's not a walk in the park but it is truly worth the time and effort to get it done. I now can walk miles, have no pain, use no crutches or cane, take no pain meds. Before I had surgery I couldn't take a step without a cane and had pretty much become housebound. I couldn't even grocery shop unless I could park near the door and use a grocery cart as a "walker". I was bad news.
Good luck to you.

The main reason for hip replacement surgery is for pain control. If the bone of the cup where the ball of the joint is (acetebulum) is eroded and the ball of the joint cannot move smoothly, the pain can be incredible. If degenerative joint disease, has deteriorated the hip, you can have what is called a pathological fracture of the hip. Which is to say, the hip breaks causing you to fall not the fall then the fracture. Physical therapy will be able to give you muscle strength, but will not make the arthritis or osteoporosis go away. Get another opinion from an orthopedic surgeon.

physical therapy can help this problem. It just depends upon the severity of the condition. Alternative treatments would be acupuncture and chiropractic treatment. Many people do well with these treatments. I've enclosed a link on finding a chiropractor in your area.
