Before people worshiped personal deities, they worshiped what they could see, what they could witness directly effecting their lives - nature and the objects found in it.

for centuries all three were untouchable bodies in the skies above us. We've been to the moon though.
For a good contrast and connection between scientific and religious views about the same phomenons look up Capernicus at wikipedia.com. Several men were shunned and even arrested by the church for discovering that the earth revolved around the sun and not the other way around.
Plus, for centuries humanity has tried to explain the unexplainable and sometimes those "explanations" become religious rule or doctine even after they have been disproved by science. But then again you have scientist who will swear up and down on an issue concerning theories like global warming and if you try to look deeper into it you are shunned as well. Go figure.

In Last Thursdayism, where the Universe was created Last Thursday, pretty much as it is, God created the Universe with photons at just the right spots with just the right polarization and directions so we'd see them. Such a devious God could have done the same sort of thing, but 6,000 or 10,000 or whatever years ago. One possible rationale for God to create the Universe each week is that it's easier. After all, the Universe only has to be a couple light weeks in diameter - not the immense thing we think we see. And, any mistakes can be fixed next week. And, God wouldn't have had to wait so long to see how things came out. God can hardly be blamed for this: 14 billion years is a long time. So in addition to devious, God may be lazy or impatient. So, God created fossils, the Hubble Space Telescope, microwave ovens, and all your favorite TV programs, etc., as well as porn, gambling and so on. Pretty cool, eh?

Science -
Sun = Sol - the star that this planet revolves around.
Moon = a secondary body that revolves around a body that revolves around a star
Stars = central energy emitting bodies that revolve around the galactic centre, usually singular but twin and triplet stars that revolve about each other and the galactic core are known to exist.
Religion, general (different religions different ideas and symbols) -
Sun - source of light, heat, and life giving "energy".
Stars - points of light, also a symbolism which is beings of spirit in Christianity.
Moon - light source of the night, correlation made between the moon and tides, also symbolizes the evil one - Satan or Lucifer in many Christian denominations.

Well, people all over the planet have seen these big things in the sky. And they notice that they move. So people start attaching significance to these things, and that's all you need to get spirituality rolling.
