Rev 19:5 And a voice came out of the throne, saying, Praise our God, all ye his servants, and ye that fear him, both small and great.

If you know how God feels about evil, and the judgment that comes upon the evil people, then you will fear the judgment of God upon those people that do evil, in essence that is hating the evil because you understand what heartbreak it causes, then if you fear that, then this helps us to follow the commandments of God, which is to love him...

Fearing the Lord is desiring the things that please Him. As Christians, we know what pleases and what does not please the Lord (if you don't, read the Bible) and we cannot live for Him and the world. Fearing the Lord is knowing the sacrifice that He made for you and I and knowing that we do not deserve what was done for us. We are not worthy of Him. Hating evil is something that should come natural to a person that has made the decision to make Christ the center of their life.. You cannot live for the Lord and the world, and expect Him to be pleased with your actions. Our flesh wants earthly things but we have to keep our minds and desires on the things above. "Hating" sounds harsh but hating the sinner and hating the evil are two different things. Love the sinner- hate the sin. Im no theologian but maybe it helped a little-it got me to think anyway. :o)

These are my thoughts. I hope it will help.
The writers of the Old Testament used fear of God as a tool to gain believers. This verse is telling you that if you fear God and his punishment, then you better not mess up. Do everything right because you will suffer if you don't. It says to hate evil, pride, being arrogant, and being boastful or outspoken. I have a hard time with the old religious leaders and the modern leaders of today, that teach to fear God when Jesus said not to fear and told us that his Father was a Forgiving and Loving God. Read the parable of the prodigal son and tell me what you think. I would rather say Fear not having God in your life because if you do not have God you will have nothing before it is all said and done.
Glad to see you are seeking answers. God gave you a brain to think for yourself. Discern everything and don't take anything for granted. Study the words of Lord Jesus. He told us all about his father and Fear was not one of the words he used that I can remember.

It is my opinion that one shouldn't fear the lord! It seems to me that God is like the shepherd whom has lost his sheep. He will search for his lost sheep always, for he loves his creations.
I think fear is a product of ignorance.
Come to think of it, evil is a product of ignorance too.

If evil is defined as a lack of good due to ignorance, rather than being the opposite of good. Therefore, why hate those whom do evil, for evil doer's are ignorant and it seems to me they should be pitied.

All humans sometimes sin don't they (due to some ignorance or other)? From my perspective, finding a solution to our own ignorances is the purpose of our lives. Ergo, helping others challenge their ignorances is serving God. For me, the best way to help others is to do so without being seen as trying to help someone. It is like giving charity as help. Jesus said; "when you give charity (alms), do not let your right hand see what your left hand is doing".

God hates evil. Fearing the Lord is having enormous respect for Him and knowing that He is God and He is right. If God hates evil, we should hate evil also and by doing so we "fear" or respect Him by agreeing with him. Kinda hard to explain.

Fearing the Lord means showing respect and a desire to live in a way that is pleasing to Him. God admonishes us to hate evil and sin, and to turn away from such things, that we may live our lives according to His will.

"Fear" in this case is defined as a holy respect, because of His power.
The Lord Himself hates evil, so we should respect Him for it, and try to be like Him.

It means if we hate these things like evil, pride, arrogance and evil ways that are hateful to God, then if we belong to Him we will hate them also.

Fear of the Lord is the fear of failing to do good.
