Women are being denied access to alternative health treatments, women are being denied birth control if they are not married, of course abortion as well, women are being denied pap smears by some doctors that believe they should not be allowed access to this service.

Where is this? In Nova Scotia, Canada.

It is against the Canada Health Act and the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. So why is it being allowed to continue. Is it the religious belief of the magority? Is it the new federal Conservative government?

You see when we talk about religion and womens rights on here it is as if some individuals have no concept of how this mentallity can strip everything from women.

I felt this was a good warning to share with you all here in R&S.
Please comment regarding womens rights and the influence of religion on them and where you think this all could go if we do are not vigelant.

Peace and love to all.

Firefly that was not an answer, it was simply evasive and rude. There is a reason this is happening. Do you know what that reason is?Perhaps you agree with this turn of events!

Source? CBC radio interview this morning! Apparently a law was passed that gave doctors the right to refuse treatments based on their personal beliefs rather than medicine alone.

As for those of you who are talking about socialism verses conservatisim it is clear you have now idea of what you are talking about.

Personally I do not wish to be an American and we did beat you once in 1812. Guns and bombs are not the only way to win a war so don't be so beligerant. Stay friends, it's better that way!

I unfortunatly, sadly, am not making this up and go get'm doc! I put this on R&S as I said above because it does relate to issues and views discussed here on a regular basis especially since it envolves abortion though it is not restricted to it.

R&S is appropriate to this question, contrary to what someone said. It's right there: "Is it based on religious beliefs?" (As well as further down.) Except for digilook, in scanning answers, I don't see that anyone knows what you're talking about. Some (Americans) seem to feel we've come such a long, long way on women's rights. Ha. I've perceived that religion has a great deal to do with many issues. (Didn't
Christian Fundamentalists have a geat deal to do with Bush? & didn't he, as a fact, say he felt he was "called" by God?) Sorry. (Not really.) Bush is relentless in his pursuit of a "legacy" through "victory" in a country invaded. Does that say anything? (I digress--sort of.) Thank you for the information. I'd like to know if you have any thoughts on what we can DO about it.

Scroll down to: "ACCESS TO ABORTIONS IN NEW BRUNSWICK"
Unfortunately the audio is unavailable due to copyright crap..

Sadly there's a big difference sometimes between what the law says and what's accepted by society. It seems a group of people have already taken the provincial government to court. I'm assuming therefore that it's a provincial responsibility so it's nothing to do with the Harper's outfit (though I'm sure he won't be pressuring anyone to solve this problem). The anti-abortion sentiment is based in religion of course but society over time has incorporated the view that abortion is wrong. Fortunately we do live in a secular society and I'm hoping the judge will do something to help these women. Also we must do our part to educate people and make sure such services are accessible and anonymous if necessary.

I'm a Canadian physician, though on the opposite coast in BC, and have also worked in Manitoba. I would like to see a citation for your claims.

Nobody is denied access to so called alternative medicine, however, it is not a paid benefit under the health plans in most (?all) provinces, so you have to pay for it yourself. I don't have a problem with that. I don't want my tax dollars paying for woo woo treatments that have no scientific basis or evidence, but I support your right to do it on your own dime.

Under the Canada Health Act, any woman has the right to access birth control, or abortion service. A physician who has religious or moral objections to either of this is required to tell patients that, and refer them to another physician in a timely manner.

I've never heard of women being denied pap tests...I think you are making that one up. If true, it is illegal.

I'm not sure why you posted this question in R&S. would it be more appropriate in politiics or health??

Jamie my friend,

I believe we are All brothers and sisters. When one of my siblings hurt, I hurt with them. We try to help each other and support each other in worthwhile endeavors. I think this is one of many. The rights of All people should be honored. We are All in this together or else we all fall. I have noticed that we are becoming a world that is very self centered and conditioned to help the few who can afford it. When the caring majority can be outweighed by the vocal minority, then there is a problem. A problem that can only be fixed by what you are doing. Awareness. After awareness comes Action. You are already doing the action. The hard thing to do after planting the seed of knowledge is to let it go and allow it grow. Serenity and calm in the face of adversity goes a long way in showing and persuading others in your belief. Be an example to follow, as you are. "Be the change you want to see in the world." Forgive me, please, if I came on too strong or vocal, my intention was to harm none. All is One

Namaste

Always with much,

Peace and Love

specific i'm. The founding fathers of course needed separation of church and state. John Adams and Thomas Jefferson had distinctive rationalization for desiring it. One believed if there wasn't a separation , the state could corrupt the church. the different believed that with out wall, the church could corrupt the state. i think Adams grew to become into for the 1st, in actuality he vetoed a bill that could of gave money to a church. it seems they have been the two precise! records, papers, letters and pamphlets for that element all point out the wall. And lots of the founders have been Deists. And Ben Franklin left Mass. for religious persecution. and then there is the Treaty of Tripoli, it states that usa wasn't in keeping with christian ideals. How approximately his place of work of religion, which gave billions to churches only earlier the election. and then there is his faith based Imitative. the two one in each and every of those have been by govt Order, no longer by regulations Congress exceeded. and think of approximately, Bush pronounced God chosen him to be President.

I would love to see a source on this, as I have no knowledge of Canadian medical law. If it is a bad idea (I cannot speak on all alternative health treatments, but these other things are all accepted as medically normal things in the western world, so not allowing them would be a bad idea), and illegal to do this (as you indicate here), it needs to be fixed.

2007-05-06 09:54:18 · answer #9 · answered by Linda R 7 · 4 1

Welcome to Canada's plan of Socialized Medicine.
It is being "allowed" to continue because, last I heard anyway, Canada is a sovereign nation able to pass laws to govern its own citizens.
You want a cause to take up for women's reproductive rights?
Talk to Saudi Arabia, or Iran, or Iraq, or any Muslim nation where life is cheap.
