Since you did not capitalize the "g" in god, I assume you are not just talking about the God of the Bible. You can find this pagan god(s) all over the world.
For the God of the Bible, you must first acknowledge that God exists. Then you have to believe what God tells and reveals to you in His word.
1. You have to be born-again of the spirit. You have already been born physically. This means to have a repented heart because you finally realize that there is something bigger than you. You are sorry for what you have said and done in the past and want a fresh new spirit. You asked God to forgive you in the name of Jesus and invite Him or give permission to come into your life. God is a gentlemen and will not force Himself on anyone who does not want Him in their life.
2. Read and study the Scripture and find a bible-believing church of your choice so that you can grow in truth and grace.
The Holy Spirit that seals you as one of God's will take you into the truth and guide you.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter- Day Saints has a good answer. Realize that you are a child (literally a spirit child) of God and need to pay attention to what he says that you may grow up to be like him.

What if I tell you there's no God? Oops, I'm going to get a lot of angry responses here, but, people, wake up! There's no God, no hell, no heaven, when you die, you just die, and no matter what your pastor or Bible says, there's no God (and I was not punished for saying it right now and even my computer hasn't crashed.)

God deals with the heart and it is up to the person when he deals with them to accept him at that appointed time believe me you will know an thats when we get save because you exsperance him in your life. It is an exsperance you wouldn't forget. there is alot of people that think they get save but later they find out different because i was one of them until i had an exsperance with him.You will know in your heart when you have his peace in you.
