Of course they can. How do you think stray animals give birth? However, like with any pregnancy non-human or not, there can be complications. I've linked you to a site below that you may find useful.

Is it your pregnant dog or a stray. The way you are talking it seem to be a stray. If so then you need to approach this at arms length. She is going to be scared and nervous but yet you need to be around if anything goes wrong. You need to give her water during whelping. Most of the time dogs do real well on their own and don't need anything from you.. Just make sure they are kept warm and have shelter..if anything you should bring her into the house make sure the puppies stay warm. Other than that let her do her own thing.

But I am a little concern here about weather this is your dog or not..if she is yours why are you talking about her as if she was a stranger. I was just wondering. If it is a stray you might want to find it's owner. But the puppies will need a warm place to stay. Bring her and her babies in the house.

It could... but it's not always the best thing. My beagle had puppies, 7 actually! And the first one she freaked and ran after it came out...imbilical cord attached....the puppy was drug about 5 feet then we stopped her. She got the cord off herself after that, chewed it. But not all dogs will. If the dog does, you can remove it...but you should talk to a vet, call the office and they will usually tell you, that you can bring it in, or they'll give you COMPLETE instructions. At least the vet offices around my place does! If the dog removes it, its self then after the puppy is...FREE then clean it up with a rag! then put it in a box with a warm towel in it. After all puppies are delivered and clean...you should get the mom and babies in a box or room together, (or deck) with a towel under them, and let the babies nurse! But...if it's not your dog, you should still take care of it, and if you don't want the pups, put an add in the newspaper, petfinder, pupperfinder, or...e-mail me! LOL I want a puppy!

Technically they can, but there are many possible complications and if not kept very warm, (above 80º) the puppies will die. That is why dogs come into season twice a year. It's nature's way of ensuring their survival when the mortality rate in the wild is so high.

Yes they can have it by themself...but it would be very kind of you to help her. The dog could use all the help she can get.
