Yes there is. It is cheap but not free. It is based on the fact that the file structure on those cards is equivalent to the file structure on a hard drive.

I had a memory card from a family member's camera with irreplaceable images that got deleted while he was trying to load them onto a MAC. I tried a number of free download recovery programs but they could not even recognize that there were any images. Out of desperation I tried one called Disk Internals Flash Recovery. Their deal is that you can download their program for free. That program will look at the camera memory card and tell you what if finds there and how big each image is. But it will not do the recovery for free. If you are convinced then you buy it for about thirty bucks and let it do the recovery for you. If you still are not happy you can get a refund. I tried it and it actually found every one of the photos and even some previously deleted prom photos.

This is when you say, "I wish I bought a Sandisk or Lexar card and installed their free image recovery software."

Try http://www.datarescue.com/photorescue/v3/index.htm for their image recovery software. I have never used it, but it is mentioned here frequently. If you have taken more pictures or deleted more images, the chances are slim that you will be successful, though.
