Do you reject them?

Do you put them in but never contact them?

Is there an "acquaintance" section?

What if you really don't want to be associated with them due to their politics, their beliefs, or how they treat your mutual friends?

you could reject them all together but then they'd know you did that.

you could accept them as a friend but keep them on a limited profile, which makes them on your friend list but they cant see anything you have or post, which is kinda pointless but then they cant approach you saying you rejected them when technically you didn't. if they say 'how come i cant see any of your info?' just say that's how you made it for everyone

Don't make them your friend in Facebook.

Do you have contact with this person often?

If not, then reject it and ignore them.

If you do, they might want to know why. Either tell them straight up why you haven't or make something up.

Just ignore their friend request. It'll sit in your waiting box for you to accept - just leave it there. I had to do that with someone for the same reasons you're mentioning.
