This can't be the strangest idea, but get a boxers' mouth-guard....you'll only rub teeth against plastic then.

I had this problem, and didn't even know it until I went to the dentist and he could tell. Without spending a large amount of money, you can fix this problem with a small purchase. Go to a Rite Aid, or CVS, or another pharmacy/retail store, and in the dental isle, there will be something called a "Doctors Night guard" It is in a white and blue box. It is a mouth guard to be worn at night, and comes in sizes xs-xl. It is comfortable, and flexible and soft.
Other then mouth guards there really is no way to prevent yourself from grinding in your sleep, as you can't wake up every time and stop yourself ya know? Good luck.

My sister-in-law has this same problem. She solved it by buying a sports gum guard at our local Wal-Mart. They're (obviously) found in the sports department, and really cheap! You just have to follow the directions on the packaging to make it fit your mouth, but it helps a lot! Plus, they're soooo much cheaper than the ones a dentist will make you get and do pretty much the same thing!
Hope that helped!

you may have to wear a gum shield like ones boxers use, my aunt has had a grinding problem for years and there seems to be no cure, but a gumshield will protect your teeth and stop the noise

Your dentist will be able to fit you with a mouth guard. If you cannot get to a dentist try fitting yourself with a sports mouth guard that you can find at any sporting goods store.

Your dentist can have a mouthgard made for you to wear while you sleep. Otherwise you can usually find them at wal mart or something, too, but your dentist will get it custom to your mouth. I've got a couple, we make them where I work. They work great.
