About 3 months ago my 3 year old cat started to throw up 2 times a day. We took him to the vet and they thought that it might be an intestinal problem so they put him on prednizone (steriod) and an antibiotic. He got better and stopped throwing up. He went off the meds and was fine for one month when it started again. King went back to the vet and was put on prednizone and Science Diet i/d food. This worked- he threw up only 2 times in 20 days. Then we ran out of the food on the weekend when the vet was closed so I had to give him my other cat's food. He got VERY sick and dehydrated and went back to the vet. They gave him an IV, antibiotic, pepcid ac, did blood work (that came back completely normal) and they claim he was better. He came home and now he is very sick again. He has been back to the vet once for IV;now we are force feeding him and giving him water and gaterade (forced) because he won't eat, giving him pepcid and prednizone. What's wrong? They don't know...

Two more things:

1) He's had bloodwork done that ruled out any issues with his kidneys
2) We've checked his food- and that was not being recalled

Oh poor kitty! I have two and big animal loving family history.

Firstly, as you probably now know, changing any animal's food abruptly can make them very ill, and some pets just have easily upset stomachs. Never feed them human food either.

Other things I'd worry about are 1) has your cat swallowed any string or ribbon or an item that might obstruct his intestines? I would recommend an xray or other test to see inside him 2) do you have any plants or flowers around that King might eat? many plants and especially flowers are deadly to cats 3) any big changes lately that might stress king out? new pets? moving house? you not around as often?

The symptoms sound serious, and if it were my cat, I'd take him to the emergency vet asap. Best of luck.

Hm, look at all the different answers you've got! Who to trust? Answer: YOUR VET.

Vomiting can have many, many, many different causes. You've demonstrated by your question that you need to keep the cat on i/d, or similar bland food for life. You said yourself it worked. Don't let him near other types of food!

This sounds like a complicated problem that is going to take a LOT of expensive investigation to truly get to the bottom of the matter. It sounds as if your vet has done right by you so far - ask him what it will take to find out the cause of the problem. Someone mentioned endoscopy - may well be the case, since things like stomach ulcers and IBS don't show up on bloods, xray or even ultrasound. Not all vet surgeries have endoscopes.

Please have a thorough talk with your vet. Ask if they think they can find the exact diagnosis for your cat's condition - vets usually have a list of possible ('differential') diagnoses, and it can take time to narrow the list down. It's the same with human doctors. If you want a second opinion, by all means get one - from another vet, not Yahoo Answers! Vets are professionals, you don't really expect to get an answer on here if a vet can't give you one do you?!

If you're not comfortable with the way things are going with your current vet, by all means find a new one.

Has your cat been in heat lately??? Cats can get morning sickness just as humans can.. Crazy huh!! If nothing else going to the vet is a very good idea, I think you will find it a simple problem and things will be fine...I also think that this could be a hair ball, my cat gets them from time to time and she is a VERY meticulouse baither.... And please DO NOT FORCE FEED!!! This can be upsetting for the cat and also dangerouse because there can be instances where the cat would actually asperate on the food (inhale it) and create much bigger problems. It may sound harsh but your cat will be ok until morning with nothing to eat or drink, And you should mix a small amount of hard food with your cats wet food at leaste once daily, this will prevent diahrea and dehydration... Good luck and F.Y.I my cats name is also Gizmo and she is set to have kittens any day now.....:)

Sounds like it's second opinion time.

Your cat may need an endoscopy to see if there isn't something going on in the stomach (i.e. cancer). When my cat was throwing up a lot and nothing else showed up anywhere, the cancer was found after the doctor decided to do an endoscopy.

Call the vet first thing in the a.m. and if he's well enough, the should do one tomorrow.

If he is still vomiting today, bring him to the ER - dehydration is an emergency.

Have the vet check your feline's mouth, esp. the upper palate, for abcesses. Tooth pain, soft tissue abcesses are relatively common reasons esp. in a younger cat. Check whether poisons have been used in your area as well. Ensure that ALL of your indoor and outdoor plants accessible to your cat are safe to consume. Also ask your vet about possible allergies. Some cats develop allergies later in life. And report any reactions to medications. Your cat should also be checked with a comprehensive blood panel to determine if renal or other disease is present. Good luck!

I'm in TOTAL agreement with BVC above... time for a different vet and as soon as possible.... You obviously care a great deal about your little man and are going the distance for him. Believe me... he knows this in spite of feeling miserable and probably why he's hanging in there....

A surprising number vets just aren't good with cats and cats aren't good patients... find a specialist or clinic that specializes / exclusively treats felines. To me, it sounds like there could be an obstruction or ulcer in his GI tract, but I am not a vet. A vet is going to need to do more than just eyeball your cat, x-rays and endoscopy are probably going to be needed. Ask another vet or rescue organizations in your area about who is the best CAT doctor around.

Really very sorry about your situation... hang in there, both of you and it's just a matter of finding a vet with the right knowledge, thoroughness and experience.

You may have a cat with a grain allergy. I feed my cats Evo no grain. Most cat foods have grain and can cause allergies, obesity and DIGESTIVE PROBLEMS. I give my cat dry food, but get one without grain. Check the ingrediants of the science diet, it may not have much grain in it or the protein source is different, that my be key too. I hope your kitty is ok! Good luck.!

Bring it to the vet's. They probably would give you a med. to give to your cat. It could be it's diet too. Don't give it the cheap stuff or soft food unless the vet told you to do so. Give it something like Special Kitty. Don't give it to manny treats either.

Try all the vets in your area sometimes one vet clinic can't find out what the problem is, but hopefully someone will figure it out. Please get help for your cat, whatever it takes!
Wishing you and your cat well!

ALSO make sure the foods you are feeding your cats are not on the recall list. --

Take your cat to a different vet and see if he's been eating any of the recalled foods!
