Dropping the atomic bomb was the best option as the course of History has shown.

No American lives were lost in either operation and Japan surrendered a few days after the second bomb was dropped, adn surrendered unconditionally.

Invading the home islands would have been long and costly, and would have likely allowed the Soviets to take northern Japan, which would have widened the following Cold War further.

Demonstrating a weapon and never using it in combat is somewhat pointless, especially if you're at war.

The Japanese people were warned that the US had the atomic bomb, the problem is that the Japanese didn't listen to the warning for cultural reasons among the more powerful politicians.

A naval blockade could have worked, but given the fanaticism of Japanese Kamakaize pilots, the only effective blockade could be maintained by submarines and literally starve the Japanese home islands into surrender. But, this would take longer. The Germans expected their U-boat "seige" of Great Britain to take a year before they would begin depleating Britain of its abilty to supply its military with fuel and other resources, but this in the end does nothing to stop an enemies determination and would have gone on until large numbers of people began starving to death. It's also important to note that in European theater, German U-boat sailors suffered the highest possible casualty rate of the war. The blockade option would have taken longer and would have put more sailors at risk.

Using the atomic bomb was the most effective option.

Dropping the bomb was the only way to defeat the fanatical Japanese. The only thing that brought them to their senses was fear of their entire culture being annihilated. Anything less and they would have fought until the last man woman and child ran out of rocks to throw.
