it's not illegal but it is unprofessional and unethical because they could be giving that student preferential treatment and marking them higher than they should be.
What would happen to the student if they wanted to end the relationship? Would the teacher then mark them down and possibly fail them for no good reason?

In some colleges or universities the teacher could (and should) loose their job.

If the student is in the professor's class, then yes. They are expected to maintain a professional student-teacher relationship. The conduct is inappropriate and unprofessional.

If the student is not in the professor's class, then they are not expected to maintain a professional relationship. So, it shouldn't offend anyone.

I think it's an abuse of power - for example, say you had a relationship with a teacher and then it broke up, how would you feel about that teacher then marking your work? Or what would happen if you wanted to end the relationship but the teacher didn't, would you feel you had to go on seeing and sleeping with them to get a good grade?

In the case where both are adults, over the age of consent

a person with care/ mentoring responsibilities for another person should be discouraged from forming romantic attachments. it is not healthy...but I don't think it should be illegal, or a cause for a 'professional misconduct' claims

well, all i know is that vast majority of society would think its wrong & taboo, but I've had a BIG crush on a HS teacher who was 32 (but looked mid-20's) & I was 15 going on 16 at the time. I SWEAR we had some kind of chemistry going on... But thats my perception of it.

20 is a bit greedy but I gusess if there are 40 weeks in an average term then one every two weeks or so is not too bad.

Good luck to them I say, wish I could be banging off 20 a term

Of course as long as he is doing it outside college then no one can complain

if the student is mature enough and not dating someone teaching them, it's fine. not dating a freshman or someone in their class. breaking up would be tricky and some would say the relationship meant playing favorites.

It is extremely unprofessional and most schools will fire a professor for that. If they don't, they should!

I've never considered this issue to be a Disease or Condition. Why do YOU feel it is?
