The kidney is responsible for filtering our blood. The membrane of the kidney is designed to excrete byproducts that we don't need and keep protein. When there is protein in the urine it means that the membrane is not functioning well. Whether this is a trivial problem or a significant one depends on the amount of protein in the urine. If there is a worrisome amount based on a urine dipstick, then it is necessary to do a 24-hour protein clearance.

A finding of urine protein could suggest a number of conditions or it could signify nothing at all. Eating a high protein meal prior to urinalysis can result in urine protein.
Urinalysis results should be taken into consideration along with other test results and, in this case, a diagnosis can't be reached on urinalysis alone. Speak to your doctor about what other diagnostic tests she/he may wish to order and ask about the significance of this urinalysis, how it fits into an overall picture.

Assuming the person who submitted the sample prepped and peed per instructions, that should not happen. If protein was the only abnormality found in the urine, it is a sign of kidney disease.

It is a sign of kidney malfunction or consuming too much protein in your diet. If you use supplements or eat alot of protein you should back off a little. If you don't consume alot of protein then you may have kidney problems, in which case you need to see a doctor.
