Separates into two or more parts? I heard a rumor that they had one that separated in case one half was damaged.

You are most likely hearing about a prototype only...there aren't too many modern situations where it would be practically needed.

If you ever watched Star Trek (TNG), the Enterprise 'saucer' portion could separate from the rest of the 'battle' portion...they hardly ever used that feature of the ship, so it was a waste of R&D effort.

No they do not. They have ships that launch LCAC (Landing Craft Air Cushion), a hovercraft, from the stern (back of the ship). They have boats that can launch other small boats but that is about it.

No, because life boat technology has increased (everything to motorized boston whalers to large red dinggys with a tent and emergency signal) and and life boats are cheaper.
