Bunker (Menhanden) is the best. You cut the fish into five pieces not including the head. Also, you could use mackerel, but there hasn't been to many mackerels around. If you could catch them on a shiny lure, shad also work. Along with bunker and mackerel, you have to cut the shad into pieces, about five pieces per fish for bait. As far as equipment, I use a 10'6" St. Croix Triumph fishing rod and a Shamino Baitrunner 4500B from the Long Island surf. I line the reel spool with 20-pound test pink Ande fishing line.

The best bait for stripers in that area are live eels. Use a heavy enough weight to keep near the bottom.

You might have to stun the eel a bit to kep him from rolling on the line and hook.

I recommend having a 2 or 3 foot leader off the sinker and use 20 pound test or stronger

I fish for Stripers of the Outer Banks, NC. Eels are best, as Brandon pointed out. I hook them about two inches up from the end of the tail. That way, they try to swim away from the line instead of trying to twist around it.

Also, keep the eels cool. If you handle them with a rag, it might help you get them on the hook easier.
