When I plug a 1G card into a Nikon 6MP camera it says it will hold 284 pix (large high quality high res selected). In real life some photos have more detail and take more space but that is about right. It also varies by brand (for some reason) and some show 278 as their camera max.
Microcenter is selling them this month for $9.99 for 1G SD card. Another option is to get two half gig cards just so that all of your images aren't on the same card (in case of a disaster or loss).
Also on the better DSLR cameras speed is not that much of an issue. The cameras have internal buffers that hold the images before they are written to the card so that you can take a series of pictures quickly even with a standard speed card. The camera will send them from its buffer to the card at the card's max speed while still accepting new images for the buffer.

The number of photos that can saved is usually determined by 2 things. The first is the number of megapixels in the camera The higher that number is the bigger the file is going to be. Also picture quality is a factor as well. Most cameras have a Small, Medium, Large/Fine size. That wil also require more space. And if you decide to shoot in RAW sizes for those pics are at least 10MB in size. I hope that this helps. In my opinion you should get a 2 GB card and you will be set.

Without knowing which camera you are buying, we can't answer. Check this chart, though:
http://www.lexar.com/digfilm/capacity_chart.html shows various card sizes with various MP cameras.
I'd say to just DO IT and buy a 1 GB card. They are not very expensive any more. I mean a Sandisk (recommended brand) 1 GB card costs about $25. If you get the faster Sandisk Ultra II card, it costs about $40. This faster card is suggested if you are going to do a lot of video shooting, but otherwise you probably would be very happy with the "regular speed" card. The Ultra II comes with image recovery software, though, and many people wish they had this at some point or another...

According to Camera World's Digital Image Calculator about 300 to 320 at your BEST setting of 6 MP. You get more if you lower your setting from 6 MP. I wouldn't lower anything just for the sake of getting more photos on your card.

It really relies upon on the traditional of each and every image. for instance, a 5 megapixel digital camera will shop pictures at about 500Kb somewhat. so that you would get round 2000 of those on a 1Gb memory card.

i have an 8 meg cam and i use a 1gig card. this gives me around 300 pics on its highest setting. 300 pics is alot of pics to wade through. your 6 meg cam would bring that up to about 450 pics. i would also suggest adobe photo shop album starter. its free from there web site and very easy to use. it sorts all your pics out for you and you can do simple adjustments to the pics if you want.
