I understand that frequent vomiting would be bad due to esophogus erosion, but how is the use of laxitives bad? I have a male friend that has some kind of bowel problem and used to have to use the restroom every couple of hours or so. He is on medication now, but still defecates approximately 6 times daily, but he's completely healthy. So that being said, how is bulimia different besides that it is self-induced?

Moving your bowels 6 times a day definately isnt normal, unless you have a bowel condition that causes this! Bullemia through use of laxatives is just not a good idea. Not only do laxatives have other effects on the body, but will cause very watery bowel movements which can burn! also this wreaks havoc with your body's electrolytes, especially potassium and sodium. The laxatives will lower potassium levels, which, if they get too low, can cause your heart to beat super abnormally, and eventually not at all. Your muscles will get very weak due to a lack of nutrients (because they are all shooting out of your bowels), and not to mention that chronic use of laxatives will make you smell bad! Anorexia and bullemia are both very serious health conditions that you should not mess around with. They are responsible for many 1000's of deaths every year. If you think you have this, its definately a good idea to go see the doc.

Bulimia and bowel induced movements both cause the body to get out of rhythm/sync and can eventually lead to other serious and deadly medical conditions. Bulimia causes erosions in the esophagus that can turn cancerous or cause deadly bleeding, and eventually the person cannot eat and has to have a g-tube placed in the stomach, feeding through a liquid. The body absorbs nutrients through the bowels so causing excessive movements stops the healthy absorbtion into the blood stream of vital nutrients. Plus eventually the bowel can perferate and the person could bleed to death or die of sepsis.

Well, I don't know what bowel problem your friend had, but many laxative abusers can develop severe electrolyte imbalances due to the effects of the laxatives. In fact, the main danger from vomiting (or at least the most immediate) is not the damage to the teeth and esophagus from the vomiting, it's the risk that may be caused by electrolyte imbalances from the vomiting.

Because bulimia is still making yourself get rid of all the nutrients that your body needs. By using laxitives, all the nutrients still come out of the basement instead of the upper floor. Also, everybody needs some body fat to survive. If that person is crapping out everything they won't be alive for much longer.

Because your not only throwing up food, it is also your stomach acid. It will tear up your insides, which may include bleeding in the esophagus. Acid will make your digestive tract more suseptible 2 infection, also your teeth will rot, and you may get a bout of gingavitus. Not 2 mention the psycholigccal aspects of it

The use of laxatives is not bulimia. The vomiting of food also rots your teeth and increases your food costs. And chronic use of laxatives will make you dependant on them.
