d some cigarettes in front of him, not a lot, just getting him used to it...he is not happy with it, but says he will not make me quit..he has never dated a smoker before...how can I get him to understand why I like smoking, and how can I get him to light my cigarettes for me when we are in public...

He does not have to light your cigarette for you. You have two hands, do it yourself.
He will not understand why you like smoking. It would probably be best if you do not smoke around him since he doesn't like it.

Understand that most non-smokers are very strongly against smoking. It smells bad, it's unhealthy, it's a gross habit... the list goes on. He doesn't have to light your cigarette for you. Sit down and have a talk with him because often this is a lifestyle that greatly affects whether a relationship can work.
