I know more than a few people who put themselves out there as intensely religious, spiritual people. Yet they have non-marital sex, babies out of wedlock, and cohabit with romantic partners. Are they breaking the rules, or am I misunderstanding some? I was raised to believe all religions prohibit sex outside marriage.

I am not an intensely religious person myself (though not an atheist), but I have been preached to by those doing what I have wondered is hypocritical. I'm also not meaning to say they are doing something evil, just tweaking the rules to their own liking.

They are breaking the rules. The way you were raised regarding sex is correct. These people are what we in the ministry call Carnal Christians, that is people that have not let go of the old way of doing things. They believe in Jesus, but do not want to adopt the walk of Jesus. In reality, there is no such thing as a Carnal Christian---you either walk the walk or you do not. Pseudo-Christian, or make believe Christian, would be a better title. They like the idea of being a Christian, but they do not want to make the commitment that is required. God is looking for committed workers and not churchy people. People who say one thing and do another are hypocrites, and Jesus despised a hypocrite above all others. The thief on the cross that was honest about his crime and his sentence was saved and entered Paradise with Jesus. The other thief on the cross that was bitter and mocking winded up in hell. the hypocrites will go to hell no matter what they claim. Anybody can claim to be a Christian, but it is quite another thing to be one.

No they aren't and no non-marital sex is not prohibited. Babies out of wedlock is a belief that modern man came up with. Do you think that way back when that people were concerned about getting married? They just wanted to survive is all. Cohabiting with a romantic partner is not either. These thoughts are antiquated.

Spirituality has nothing to do with the dogma that religions teach.

With that said if it is your belief and you feel it's proper not to do so then by all means follow that. Just don't damn others for not following your beliefs.

Also thank you for asking such a well thought out question.

Generally speaking, people are fallible, we do stupid things that we know are wrong or "we should not". Our forms on earth are imperfect reflections of our originals in the universe (heaven); the writers of the bible were also fallible humans w/ divine inspiration. The people who you refer to intentions maybe good, but they are also humans just as you & I. Some of the writings outside of the teaching of Jesus may have been added to deal w/ the social conditions of the time. They don't sound like charlitans, as some Christians in denial are, extremists who prefer to have the outer cup "clean" while doing nothing about the most important, the inner. Strive to be as close to God as humanly possible, but allow yourself the room to stumble & sometimes fall. The perfection is also found in the inperfection while striving to align yourself with him. I hope this helps, thanks.

Yes they are breaking the rules. By their works they make known that their worship is not exceptable to God. read 2 Timothy 3, v 1 to 9. This might help you to see why.

"It is written (Tob. 4:13): 'Take heed to keep thyself. . . from all fornication, and beside thy wife never endure to know a crime.' Now crime denotes a mortal sin. Therefore fornication and all intercourse with other than one's wife is a mortal sin." - St. Thomas Aquinas ("Summa Theologica" 13th century A.D.)

. "Fornication is carnal union between an unmarried man and an unmarried woman. It is gravely contrary to the dignity of persons and of human sexuality which is naturally ordered to the good of spouses and the generation and education of children. Moreover, it is a grave scandal when there is corruption of the young."

. "Among the sins gravely contrary to chastity are masturbation, fornication, pornography, and homosexual practices."

Yes, they are breaking the rules. Talk to your grandmother (or anybody over 45). This world is full of hypocrites & is getting worse. This country was based on God (not religion) and His laws. Can you see the difference between our beginning & our now close to end?

I agree.... not as a religious person but as a Christian- we are not truly walking a Christian life ....if we are not following Christ....we need to do what He says to do...or not to do & thats what makes us a follower.... a person who follows, while Christ leads...not someone who goes his own way.....They are either deceived or they truly dont love Christ....Good question....

Why worry about what others do. Focus on your own journey with God and on helping others God will judge the people you are talking about.
