I hear 6 months to a year is standard. And that depending on the job, one can stay out longer... is there a limit? Would being out there 14 months now and not expected back for another 11 months be normal for volunteer?

im not sure about the other branches but i know that in the army they can leave you there until your mission is complete. they try not to go over 12 months (which is the normal deployment right now) but they do go over that sometimes. for example, almost all the soldiers over there right now just got extended so their deployment will be 15 months. it really sucks and is very hard on them and their families.

Depending on the unit and what your soldier does he may be required to stay longer then someone else in another job.
The time line you just described does seem rather long. If he volunteered to stay over there that is something different entirely.

Since voluntary enrollment in the military is down, tours of duty are being extended for 15 months or longer. There is absolutely no gurantee how long one will be there.

...actually, one can re-enlist as often as the military will accept your re-enlistment. By the way, re-enlistment rates have risen every single year since 2001, and all military branches are exceeding their goals in new enlistment rates. Our boys (and girls) in the military must know something that the media doesn't.
