I thin 'HI' or 'HELLO' would be a good place to start conversation and if the stranger is willing to talk back. :)

It's really weird; I am naturally *approachable* to people (when I go grocery shopping, elderly people always come up to me and ask either if I can read the label of a canned good, or if I can reach something they can't.) I usually just smile at the person I would like to talk to, look them straight in the eyes, and say "Hello!" and remark on a ring or piece of clothing I find interesting. Then that goes into where they got the item, and so on. Usually, you try to catch their eye, and by doing that first thing, you can immediately tell if they are amenable to converse or not. It's all in their body language. If they hold themselves stiffly, and look away or furtively, as if they do not want to talk ( like an experience I had on the Tube. It's kind of an unwritten rule that you do not speak on the London subway. ) I mean, I don't sing, "My oh my what a wonderful day!" or anything. Sometimes *I* don't feel like talking. It all depends. 1. check out the person's body language. Try catching their eye, and by that alone you will *know* if they want to talk or not. But, otherwise, if you experience the opposite, just remark on the day, the weather, (boring but works) but I find if you focus on something that the person is wearing or reading, that's a guaranteed conversation starter. All people want to feel special and interesting. Focus all of that energy on them, and they will respond in kind. Good luck.

I look around the area I'm in or look at what the person is wearing. I then will comment on something and wait for a reaction. I will make a commment though about something that I want a response to, and that will tell me about the person. For example I may say "That child over there reminds me of my little brother." This immediately sparks interest and can begin a conversation.

All you have to say is Hi.Hello, how are you, where are you from, and things like that. Once you get the hang of it you can do it just about anytime, anywhere.
