Iesvs Nazarenvs Rex Ivdaeorvm. "Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews."
This is the Latin. According to Scripture, the inscription on the cross was repeated in Latin, Greek, and Hebrew. "I.N.R.I." is just "shorthand."
It was perhaps inevitable that "occult" traditions would attach other meanings to the acronym. In alchemy, it's commonly said to stand for "Igne Natvra Renovatvr Integra": "By fire, nature is perfectly renewed." Delving deeper, we find that in the system of correspondences of the Qabalah, I or the Hebrew Yod is attributed to the zodiacal sign of Virgo, N or Nun is attributed to Scorpio, and R or Resh is attributed to the Sun. Now in Egyptian symbolism, Virgo is Isis, Scorpio is Apophis, and the Sun is Osiris - thus the entire legend of the murder and resurrection of Osiris is represented in symbolic form. IAO is furthermore the great Gnostic name of God.

From Wikipedia, INRI is an abbreviation of the Latin phrase IESVS NAZARENVS REX IVDAEORVM. In the Bible, John 19:19, it means "Jesus of Nazareth the King of the Jews".

I -- Jesus (I and J were interchangeable in the old days)
N -- of Nazareth
R -- King of the ... ("Rex" for king)
I -- Jews
It was put there by the Roman soldiers as an act of mockery toward Jesus, I think.

It was meant to read IN RIOT BC. which stands for 'I Never Rote Iny of this bull crap,' but there just wasn't enough room on the sign.
P.S. Jesus never received a formal education. He learned to spell from the lepers, who just didn't have the energy to teach him correctly. He thanked them by only healing a few of them, instead of them all, as repayment for his partial education.
