I have recently made the descision to be a vegetarian, and I was at first thinking that my dog can't possibly be put on a vegetarian diet. Then I heard that there are vegetarian dog foods. Is this healthy for them? If so what is the best kind and where can I find it?

Don't worry I don't intend to compromise the health of my dog. That would be pretty hipocritical since the reason Im a vegetarian is because of the animals. I do want to find a good organic dog food though.

It is sooo unhealthy for a dog to eat nothing but veggies. They need to eat meat. It can cause major PH level changes in their bodies and it can eventually make them sick. Keep in mind dogs are carnivoires not like us omnivoires. They should really be eating meat.

Yes there are vegetarian diets out there for dogs and they can survive on them
but meats have certain types of amino acids dogs need that cannot be sourced through non meat proteins, so without it does cause malnourishment which will weaken the immune system, there fore your dog will not be as healthy as on a diet contain lots of meat, it is used mostly as a last resort for dogs with lots of allergies

Dogs need meat in their diets. Yes there are some all vegie dry dog foods but I was told it is not healthy for them and the dog can have stomach problems. If you wish to be a vegetarian so be it. It sould not be imposed upon your dog though.

I do not think that it is really a good idea. I saw the veg dog food somewhere online. Seems to me that a good commercial dog food like "Natural Balance" or "Blue Buffalo" "Nutro Ultra" are the best bets.
That said, once in a while I will mix wild rice, brown rice, cooked carrots and cooked chicken and give it to her as a special meal.

No, a dog should NOT be on a vegetarian diet. They are carnivores..they are designed to extract essential nutrients from meats not grains/veggies. While a dog can "exist" on a vegetarian diet it is not healthy for them to do so.

You have to be careful now a days with the rice and wheat proteins . They are all on recall.... Blue Buffalo was recalled last week for rice protien. They are lean meat based but go with something like Natures Choice and stay away from wheat , corn, rice byproducts

It is possible, and they do make diets designed for people who want their dogs on a vegatarian diet, but most vets, and I, believe that this is an unhelathy diet...if you can, please, for the sake of your dog, keep him on a meat diet...but if you must, http://www.dogfoodproject.com/ gives you tips on how to do it right.
The answer is...yes...you can shove nothing but grains and veggies down their throat and call it a diet...but no, it's not complete nor healthy...and despite all these posts, I don't think we'll be able to sway you, so please, if veggie dog is the way you'll be going, please do some research for the better of your dog.
