There are a number of reasons why some people think this , the ones that knock it will generally be those who have never even tried it themselves.

1> It is FREE. You can install it on as many pcs as you want , and making copies to give to other people is actually encouraged by the makers - try that with Windows!
2> There is no activation like Windows , no serial numbers to get lost etc.
3> All updates are free and you can download and burn any new versions when they are released without any registrations etc
4> It supports more hardware out of the box than any other distribution of Linux and is stable and secure from viruses and trojans.
5> It comes with a Live CD/DVD so you can actually run the O/S from your drive without installing to see how it handles on your own pc before installing. If you were so inclined , you could actually run a pc without a hard drive and just use the Live CD trick with a USB flashdrive for data storage.
6> It is very quick at installing - and installs the O/S , drivers , and software much faster than a Windows install ( and then you need to put in drivers and software to get it to work )
7> Dell are shipping PCs with Ubuntu installed and from what I have read HP are going to do the same shortly.

Yes , I do use it myself so I am a little biased.
However , the main point I make to other people is that if you don't want to play games on your pc , then there is really no reason at all to put up with Windows anymore.
From Internet , Email , Office work , Programming , Graphics , animation , desktop publishing etc it is all included within Ubuntu for free.

The most common sort of comment I have had back from friends who have gone across to Ubuntu Linux , is that they now feel that they are controlling how they use their pc , not using it the way Microsoft want you to.

I can't recommend it enough.

They like it. It is free. It is very stable and comes with many of the types of programs most people use on their computers. It is easy to install. Try downloading an ISO of Ubuntu, burn it to a disk, set your computer to boot from the CD drive and boot into Ubuntu. It is a live CD meaning it doesn't install on your hard drive unless you click on the install Ubuntu icon on the desktop. Using the liveCD is slower than if installed but it will give you an idea of what people are talking about. Personally, I prefer kubuntu as I like the kde desktop better than gnome. But in the linux world, unlike windows, you have the capability to change just about everything. But I use openSUSE most these days. Give Ubuntu a try. Maybe you'll like it!

Compared to other Linux distros it's the easiest to setup, in my experience anyway.

It comes on 1 CD, you can boot from the CD (called a "live CD" or "live distro") and play around with it all you want before actually installing it. Other distros require multiple CDs. It's also very easy to find and instal new software. And it can handle your Office and image editing needs, all for free.

Yellow Dog, Red Hat, Suse, the list of Linux distros goes on, they all have their pros and cons

I've found Ubuntu to be the easiest.

Because that's the one they have used or because they have heard that from someone else. Linux is about choice go to www.livecdlist.com down load a bunch of them, try them out and make up your own mind. Personally I like Damm small Linux, Puppy Linux, Slax, Dream linux, Elive, Mepis, and Pclinuxos. Each of them looks different is easy to use and fun. Explore and enjoy.
