depends on what kind. cardiod aims right at you and thats most common, so you sing strait into it (not from the side). And dont hold it too close to your mouth especially if its expensive (the humidity from your mouth can damage it and you dont want to sound too overbearing, fuzzed, or loud.) Good Luck!!!

Hold it the width of two or three fingers away from your mouth (about an inch to an inch and a half) any closer and you get more emphasis on the bass frenquencies, however the further away you hold it the harder it is for people to hear you. (unless you are a trained professional who can really project your voice.) So generally the farther you hold it the harder it is for your nice sound person to get a good sound level without risking feedback. (an exception to this is if you are shouting or speaking very loudly, you would hold it somewhat further so the sound levels aren't too high)
Be aware of where your microphone is pointed at all times especially when you are not speaking. (in other words holding the mic) Never ever ever point it at a monitor or speaker. That produces feedback.
I wish you the best on your performance

carry it the width of two or 3 palms away out of your mouth (approximately an inch to an inch and a factor) any closer and likewise you get extra emphasis on the bass frenquencies, nonetheless the added away you hold it the harder it relatively is for human beings to take heed to you. (different than you're a knowledgeable respected who can fairly challenge your voice.) So in all probability the farther you hold it the harder it relatively is on your first-fee sound guy or woman to get a properly sound degree without risking innovations. (an exception to that's once you're shouting or speaking very loudly, you should maintain it somewhat added so the sound stages are no longer too suitable) pay interest to wherein your microphone is pointed continually specifically jointly as you at the instant are no longer speaking. (in diverse words retaining the mic) in no way ever ever ingredient it at a music or speaker. That produces innovations. I choose you the conventional on your performance

Sing or speak directly into it, not into the side but into the middle. Hold it fairly close to the mouth, maybe an inch or so. I know some others have sugessted a further distance, but if you are singing and using effects on your vocals too much distance from the mic will nullify the effects, AND if you are speaking at the far distance the Mic will have to be turned up far too much to hear you and risk feedback.

If you have a big voice like mine, hold it about 3 to 4 inches away at closest. On high notes, hold it about a foot away. If not, hold it about two inches away.
