Actually, if your "in-law" has been taking "notoriously" good care of this truck then you shouldn't have any problems out of it at all.
Diesels are some on the strongest engines on the road but when one breaks down its very costly and the Cummins Dodge diesel is one of the strongest. And with only 125k its just getting broke in. Just be sure to keep up with the scheduled maintenance and you should have no problems at all.

The Dodge Cummins Turbo Diesels (CTD) are bullet proof motors! At 125,000 miles that motor is just breaking in. You will easily get 500,000 miles on a CTD. 1994 is the first year the body style changed for the dodge with the CTD as 1993 CTD's still were first generation body style.
Also, the 12V (12valve) CTD is still know for great fuel economy compared to the newer 24V (24valve) CTD's. Only draw back is you can't add a powerchip to the 12V CTD's. The truck your father-in-law is selling.....is a great deal on that truck!
The only real issue I have seen with these trucks have been the auto transmission & even the front end's of the trucks (ball joints) as the CTD is a very heavy motor and places a fair amount of stress on the front end. If you drive this truck respectfully you really will not have any troubles. This truck will pull and keep pulling.....the body of this truck will fall apart before your motor will die!
The Drawback on owning a diesel is any maintenance issues or repairs come up can be expensive. As well your oil changes will be more than a gaser as I believe it uses in the neighbourhood of 11.5 L of oil/change.
I would definitely go for the deal....you will not look back at this as the CTD is a strong motor and Dodge is a nice truck!

This is a very good truck. Dodge builds a very tough truck. There are no problems that I have heard of and I have the same year and model that you are asking about. I love this truck and would buy another. Mine has 226,000 miles on it and still running great.

These trucks don't have a lot of major issues. The fact that it's a diesel isn't too bad either. Just make sure that you don't run it out of fuel. The mileage on a diesel is better than a comparable gasoline engine.

For Jim, the fuel consumption is not that bad at all. Being a 1994 it's gonna be pretty reliable if he's took that good care of it. It's a all mechanical motor which means no chips and electronics to worry about. You didn't say if it was 4x4 or not. I'm assuming its not though.

you are probably safe with this one however the automatic transmissions have not held up too well behind this engine under hard use, so keep the fluid and filter service current. [ engine makes too much torque for trans to handle] even still for 5 grand this is a steel even if you have to put a tranny in it at some point. note: as a precaution replace the head lamp switch now and inspect the quick disconnect that plugs into it for damage [pigtails are available and should be soldiered in, heat shrinked, and neatly taped.] do not use butt style crimp connectors for this job period. good luck
