Religion is an instrument of solace , peace ,understanding and fulfilment of ones purpose of life. The purpose the religions teach might be right or wrong; but they offer some peace of mind comfort to the individual.
It may be through worship of god or practice of some acts of service to community or charity and conducting a pious life

Good question. Religion is generally defined as submission to (the will of) God. We find most people who accept God to be engaged in praying to God to help them improve their material condition. Few are praying to be liberated from this material existence but even fewer are trying to please God or trying to serve God with devotion. This is the culmination of religion as Jesus says in his first commandment- Love thy Lord with all your mind, heart, body and soul. In other words engage whatever you have in the loving service of the Divine. This is real religion. Also religion is not merely following certain codes and hoping to go to God at the end. It is a positive, progressive march to the Supreme, meaning you can experience the divine even within this body. Such religion is called a science because it is tested by one's own self.

The word religion, used in English to describe "all systems of worship, ritual and sacred texts" comes from the Latin root religio meaning "obligation (as an oath), bond between man and the gods, scruples, reverence for the gods."

Hence, the modern generalized version of the word, meaning "A particular system of faith or worship", and "Action or conduct indicating a belief, reverence for and desire to please a divine ruling power; the exercise or practice of rites or observances of this."

As simple and common sense as these definitions of the word "religion" appear, they are in fact the starting point of the common themes of every single religion that has ever existed on the planet. These literal implications are the foundations upon which each and every religion is based.

1st literal implication of the word "religion" - The existence of supernatural being/force or beings/forces

3rd literal implication of the word "religion" - The incidence of contact between the supernatural being/force or beings/forces and certain human beings

4th literal implication of the word "religion" - The existence of documentation as the basis of a pact/covenant/oath/bond between the god(s) and humanity

I will give you the meaning. (since you can anyway find the definition in any dictionary )

Religion is a Way of LIFE.
It attemopts to touch every aspect of your life and help you by suggesting a time tested path with lesser defect opportunities. But great religions also give you enough knowledge(gyan) to keep you informed about the need to change part of such 'way of life' as the times change.

Many great people living on earth are capable of defining it!

I checked my understanding of religion but withdraw from defining it! I find that...

No religion will survive without HIM!

Regards!

As widespread as it is, that's a bit of a toughy. Kinda like Holmes' "obscenity" conundrum.
Now some clever dude somewhere once said words to the effect that "Faith is the unwavering belief in a concept, despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary"
And from this, I might say that a "religion" emerges when a group of people collectively and relatively uniformly adhere to the same basic tenets which constitute their faith.
"Organized religion" happens when one of these groups codifies their tenets, and names themselves.
The inherent evil in organized religion is that in times of stress, organized religion(s) tend to demand, by force of gun or law, that everyone, even those outside the bounds of denomination, adhere to their particular tenets.
This is as true and demonstrable in post-911, or even post-columbine, america as anything you'll find in muslim-extremist countries.

Religion is nothing but a set of guidelines laid out by ancient wise men who were leaders of the society and in order to oversee smooth functioning of the society they laid out this set of guideline which all could follow and exist in harmony.Several of these came out depending on the various perspectives of different leaders but all had common objectives.

see man has this urge to unite with a higher "perfect" being i.e. supposedly God....
what has happened is in an attempt to unite with this perfect being man created religion so as to devote himself to this god.......
religion is sort of like mans way of dealing with lonliness and insecurity.....
unfortunately it has created barriers in the human race which has lead to discrimination...
therefore to sum it all up....
religion is a bunch of crap that men long ago made up coz they were really bored and had nothing to do....
we are not hindi muslim christian or jew......we are just plain old boring humans!
