Can I get the same benefits aerobically if I do 30 minutes on the stationary bicycle instead of 30 minutes of walking? (I currently walk at least two miles a day, five days a week, but I'm thinking of incorporating the stationary bike in lieu of walking a couple of times a week -- in other words, walk the three times a week and bicycle the two times a week.) I also do weights twice a week.

Exercise buffs, before I am slammed by you, please note that I am a beginner at exercising, and that I will incorporate more exercise gradually. Sorry if this does not sound like much exercise. (No, I am not fat.)

Sounds like you're doing great. Variety is important in any exercise program, both for your muscles, and for your attention span. Anything can get boring over time!

Look at the intensity of your physical activities. If you're exercising for fitness you'll want to elevate your heart rate. No matter what the activity (walking, stationary bike, etc) work at it hard enough that you're breathing heavier and can only speak in shorter sentences. If the intensity is the same (bike vs walking) then the aerobic benefit will be the same as well.

Switching around to different things is good. It helps keep the body from getting used to "the same old routine". Also since the bike is no impact, and you can sit or watch TV while riding, you may be inclined to pedal longer than you would workout if walking.

Definitely start small. I started at 30 mins a day, worked up to 1 hour of activity and now often do 2 hours (a morning workout and an evening workout, if I have the time).

See this site for a list of calories burned during activities. Then you can gauge what you'll burn biking versus walking and can adjust your workout times accordingly, to burn the amount of calories you desire. For my weight, the cycling would burn twice the calories of walking.

There's nothing wrong with swapping the bike for walking. Unless the bike has some arm movement involved, you won't get that with the bike like you do with walking.

However, for the cardio effect, both are good. Just don't give up the walking.

Sounds like you have a good program set up. Good luck!

Walking is usually advised as an excercise to people who are just starting to excercise. Walking is recommended for people who have just started because you can do it at your own pace. Since you've been walking for a while, I think it would be awesome to use the stationary bike.

It would actually benefit you more aerobically because you would sweat more, which means more calories burned.

Good luck!

relies upon to a most suitable volume on the terrain and your actual challenge. Flat land as antagonistic to hills. when you're youthful and in sturdy structure you could walk a standard 3 to 5 miles per hour. cycling on sturdy terrain you could really double that p.c... once you should carry a heavy p.c.. and performance to stroll steep hills it could be a lot less. Temperature and different climatic circumstances ought to also result your distance traveled.
