When I switch it back on at the mains, I have to do this twice for some reason. These tvs are obviously designed to be left in standby mode, but we all want to do our bit to save energy!

Standby is there for people who want to have the TV turn on faster. So, turning it off completely will certainly cause no harm, will save you energy, but it will take a little bit longer for the TV to turn on.

No, if it was harmful, why would they put a standby button there in the first place?

Nope no harm whatsoever. You may even be prolonging it's service life.

No, it doesn't do it any harm whatsoever. In fact i would encourage you do do this because, as you already know, you're saving power.
