Diesel fuel contains between 18 and 30 percent more energy per gallon than gasoline.

Diesel technology also offers a greater power density than other fuels, so it packs more power per volume.

Diesel has 10% more energy at 100% efficiency. But diesel engines are more efficient so you can't compare. Best way to see how much better they are is to compare the mpg of a diesel car/truck to the same in gas.

Fuel Type BTU/gallon
Petrol 125000 (87-98)
Diesel fuel oil 138690
Gasohol 120900 (10% ethanol + 90% petrol)
LPG 95475 (110)
Residential fuel oil 149690
Ethanol 84400
Methanol 62800

Given that naturally aspirated diesel engines generate less horsepower per C.I. than gas engines, a diesel will get better mileage. Diesel is also less combustible than gasoline. Comparing just the fuels is kind of apples and oranges since they only operate in different engine models.
