Sad to say, they typically aren't given enough importance. Christ simplified the law of the Old Testament so that we could understand it better, and gave plenty of examples in His parables. With all that, you would think the world would be a Utopia by now, wouldn't you?

Christian ethical teachings were formulated for those who cares about going to heaven (i.e the joyful eternal life). Therefore, we Christians consider it as the main important thing in this short, earthly life, because we are focusing our eyes toward the eternal happiness!
It is like an American ambassador who cares not too much with the harsh living he may face in Somalia, since he knows that it would only be temporary; soon he will be back happily to US.
Christians care not too much with the oppression we are subjected to on earth, since we only sojourn the earth, and soon we will be back to the joyful everlasting life prepared by Jesus Christ who did formulated the Christian ethical teaching in the past.
Be blessed, buddy!

Using "Christian" and "Ethics" in the same sentence is an oxymoron.
Look at the Crusades, the northern Ireland troubles, the holy wars, the paedophilia, the massive wealth of the churches, the Dark Ages, the "flat earth", sexual inequality, repression, etc, etc.
A "God of Love" who allows the death of innocent children through cancer and the like, a "God of Love who watches a drought stricken country and allows it to rain on the sea - what, do fish need more water?
Don't give me "circular answers" like "Do not tempt the Lord" or "the ways of God are mysterious". They all mean nothing.
Christians (indeed ALL religions) have been given multiple chances to get it right...they have failed time and time again.
And they want another chance?
Consign ALL religion to the dust-bin of history, and let's get on with life.

Proverbs 3:1 My son, do not forget my teaching,
but keep my commands in your heart,
2 for they will prolong your life many years
and bring you peace and prosperity.
3 Let love and faithfulness never leave you;
bind them around your neck,
write them on the tablet of your heart.
4 Then you will win favor and a good name
in the sight of God and humankind.
5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart
and lean not on your own understanding;
6 in all your ways submit to him,
and he will make your paths straight.
