I absolutely love talking about my dane. He is 5 and 1/2 months old and his name is Bigfoot. That is a family members nickname that I passed on. It was my grandfathers nickname. Bigfoot is a male fawn great dane, a real goofus sometimes but I love him as if he were my own kid. He is absolutely wonderful with my 2 year old daughter and 8 and 1/2 month old son, a big baby and great company. I can put my son on the floor to play and Bigfoot lays there beside him, doesn't mess with him or anything. He does get the zoomies sometimes when he is outside for a little bit, I love the way he runs, it is so smooth and it surprises me how agile he can be for how big he is. At 5 months old he measured 28 inches at the shoulders. What is really funny is when my 2 year old daughter is "terrorizing" Bigfoot and he jumps over the recliner and is running through the apartment. It is so funny. LOL !!!! Bigfoot also goes everywhere with me, he loves riding in my truck with the family and DOES NOT like being left alone, if we go in somewhere and cannot take him in with us he "fusses" at me until I come back out of the store or wherever and give him some hugs and attention. He is completely spoiled but a very well behaved pup and I get compliments on him all the time. A real Mama's boy. !!!!

You are so obviously a dane owner and lover- I can always tell one b/c we all sound the same - gaa gaa over our "gentle giant" - my first dane, a male named "raleigh" was MASSIVE - I swear, if we could have gotten him weighed and measured - we would have swamped any dane in the record books - he was so scared at the vets office of the scale (sound familiar?) that the vet topped it out at 300 lbs. and just wrote - BIG. He was such a chicken - my fav story is one night (2 oclock in the morning, no less) he REALLY had to go to the bathroom and decided to go thru our huge doggie door to the yard ( again, with a dane we probablly would have been better off with just taking the door off the hinges) and he went thru so fast that he literally took the doggy door off the hinges and was running thru the yard with this huge plastic ring around his neck !!! He made so much noise that we all ran in a panic to see what happened and then we all were about to pee in our pants when we were chasing after him in the middle of the night to try and calm him down enough to get the door off of him. It was great ! We had to put raleigh to sleep a few years ago at the ripe old age of 8 - He was the best. Now we have a 7 month old dane named Daisy - she is now the apple of my eye. So cute and so full of energy - She SOOOOOOOOOOo gets the zoomies - it is wild to watch. We haven't had any holes in the walls - yet - but I can see that coming soon. Raleigh never did that crazy wild eyed run that you refer to but Daisy sure does. WOW.

I have owned Danes for years. I currently have 2 One is a 5 year old spayed female. She is a fawn and is 36" tall. I showed her in rally and obedience and she has titles in both. She has her AKC CGC. She is also a certified therapy dog. I also use her as a meet and greet dog for AKC CGC tests. She has been in parades, demos etc. She is a very calm quiet girl.
My second Dane is a 10 month old fawn boy. He is 33" tall and 130#. I show him in conformation. He will also be shown in rally and obedience and eventually be tested for therapy dog.He has his AKC CGC. My boy loves to get the zoomies and he loves to play.

Both of my Danes love stuffies and raw bones. My boy likes balls and his favorite toy is the bad and good cuz toys. My girl loves her kong. They both love peanut butter.

Well I can tell you about my friends Dane, Daisy, a beautiful black and white lady! She's a real lady, very graceful and timid, great with kids. Sometimes we want her to play with my other friend's rottie, but he's really boisterous and scares her - but then she'll sneak up on him sometimes and try to play. She makes him jump out his skin, then she jumps out her skin too! I love watching them together.

Daisy was attacked by two greyhounds once, can you believe it? They're supposed to be a gentle breed! Poor little girl, she was OK though, some bite wounds but nothing too serious.

There are a bunch of things you should know about dog training but we are going to discuss what I feel are some the most important. Keep in mind that these are only some of the things you should know. Go here http://OnlineDogTraining.enle.info/?s7G3

1. Repetition is the number 1 principle of dog training. Dogs just like humans learn by doing things over and over in order to get better.

2. Dog Training can and should be fun for both you and your new pet.

3. Training sessions should always be short but sweet. I never work a dog more than 15 minutes in a session to keep from losing the dog's attention. You should train you dog at least once a day but never more than three formal sessions a day.

4. Your goal should be that each training session is just a little bit better than the last one. You need to always strive to make the training better, slowly. I mention this because quite often I see people who do daily training sessions but the dog never gets better and it is not the dogs fault.

5. Having patients is very important in dog training. Losing your temper does not work with a canine it simply makes things worse.

6. Exercise is very important in the training process to get rid of all the dogs nervous energy.

7. Taking your pet for walks is very important because it develops serotonin which gives your dog a feeling of well being.

8. Always be sure to give your dog a bunch of praise in your training. It is your dog's paycheck for doing a great job.

9. Never hit your dog. I have heard people say I never hit my dog instead I roll up a magazine and swat it. It's the same thing... hitting is hitting.

10. After each training session be sure to do something that your dog will enjoy. Take it for a walk, throw the ball or maybe even rub its belly. Just do something that makes the dog look forward to the next training session.

These are things that I teach my dog training students as well as my dog training clients. I hope these things will give you something to think about when training your dog. Spend some time training your dog daily and you will both reap the benefits.
