I wrote on here previously about my 10 mth old cat being traumatised. Thanks to all who answered, your replies were very helpful. However, his tail seems to be hanging down all the time now. Could it be broken?

Thanks to all who have replied. Yes I took him to the vet on Wed and there was no visible signs of any damage. He got an anti-biotic and painkiller jab just incase. I will get him back to the vet again though. Many thanks.

a few years back one of my cats got into a fight w/ a stray, took her to the vet, (she was pretty beaten up poor thing) she had to be shaved from head to toe, we found lots of small punctur wounds all over her body, the real concerning one was at the base of her tail..... they treated it with meds, and put her on an antibiotic, but her tail stopped standing up, it just hung there, she had feeling in it, but she wouldnt move it at all...... talked to the vet, she said, because of the bite there was swelling on the ligaments and muscles, and it could be months before all the inflimation in the area would be gone enough for her to move her tail again. She was right, It took about 3 months before she started twitching her tail back around.
Just be patient, im sure its just something that needs to work out on its own..........

My cat's fur is finally growing back because he had surgery, his tail was broke and we don't have a clue as to how it happened. The vet says it can happen very easily. rocking chairs, something fallen on it, slammed in the door, stepped on but if this is the case that the tail is broke, then it must have surgery. The tissue will start dying off to both ends and gangerine can set in even though there is no sore visabile to the eye. If you have this concern take it to the vet, the vet can tell just by feeling it. One person even asked he on here why I had surgery because it was not necessary, boy was she wrong!!! I coud have lost his whole tail and him!!!! It heals fast too.( after surgery) Good Luck

Yes, cats do break their tails, and when they do they hang down as if lifeless.

You need to get this checked by a vet if you haven't already - cat's tails are part of their spine, so breaking them can be very serious indeed. Very often it makes the animal unable to pee and/or poo, or makes them incontinent.

Cats do not scream in pain when something is broken (they may do at the time of injury but not afterwards). They are a lot tougher than us and their survival instinct is to not show when they are in pain. This is an important thing to know, cat's pain is often overlooked because of this!

Yes. My cat never broke his tail but he got an abcess on it and his tail was limp.
When i took him to the vets they said it might have been broken or it could be an abcess. Luckily for the cat it was the latter.

Your cat may have been in a fight and received a cut which is hurting him that might be another reason but for your peace of mind and the cats well being please get him to the vets.

cats can break their tails, i belive. but if the cat has the tail drooping between its legs from the base, it is probably simply shocked and frightened by everything that it once found normal, much like what dogs do. if the tail is dangling from the middle on upward, then it may be broken. take it to a vet anyway, just to get it checked on. i hope i helped..i don't know that much about cats...

Sorry to hear of your cats troubles. It is poss for them to break thier tails around the base. An old cat of mine got run over he had his leg really badly crushed and his tail was hanging off you could see the bone. He had run home half a mile and jumped over a 6 foot fence to get back to me. It was awful to see. He had to have his leg and tail taken off. I had to watch him learn to walk letting him fall but I knew if I didn't he would never learn. anyway sorry got lost there lol It could be the muscles or tendons ect. Go back to the vet unless he quite happy my cat lived without his tail for ages very happy till some worthless t*wt shot him and he died from his wounds. The worst thing was he had be pulled around by kids before we got him and it took me 2 years of him scratching me to bits to try to gode me into doing the same, after that he was stuck to me. He was a black cross siamese. Sorry to mix stories up I just like to tell people about him he was the best cat I ever had.

There might be a bone by the tail broken, or the tail bone broken. Go to your local vets and they'll look it up :)

I didn't see your previous post but yes cats can break their tails. If it's hanging lifeless I would take him to a vet asap. their could be nerve damage.

It sounds as if its broken, can you cat feel anything in his tail- try pinching his tail and if he doesn't react then it may be broken.

Have you taken him to a vet to see what they say.
