We have given him Iams in the past. But this seems to lead to him having struvite crystal problems.
Other cat owners tell me that it can resolve itself or that the food doesn't always matter.
I know if he is totally blocked that he could die. Please does anyone know where and how the bladder is supposed to feel??
Last vet visit the vet pressed and out the urine came.........I don't want to hurt him...is this an emergency situation??

I can't advise you how to express a bladder over the internet - it's a difficult thing to be able to find. Get the vet to teach you next time you go, but please do NOT try doing it yourself now - you might be squeezing the wrong thing! Also if the bladder is blocked it cannot be expressed. It has to be catheterised if it is blocked, and even this can be very difficult as the blockage stops the catheter from being passed.

Food absolutely does matter when it comes to struvite crystals - diet is often what causes them to form. Overweight also exacerbates the situation.

If the cat is still able to urinate to an extent, get him to the vet first thing in the morning and get them to advise you on diet then - there are special diets for managing urinary problems.

Don't risk damaging the cat by trying to find the bladder now, wait for the vets, or find an emergency vet if you see him straining to urinate with nothing coming out.

Yes, this could be an emergency, you sshould rush him into the vet as soon as the office opens, don't take no for an answer. If males have a urinary infection, then the tract is blocked and don't try to presss on the bladder your self. If this other vet did nothing to help your boy in this situation, then you see another one and as soon as the office opens. Once they get to this state the urine backs up and can destroy the bladder and liver and then death occurs and he will be in so much pain before. Rush him in. No, this cannot relolve itself. also, you must feed it canned food as well. I use fancy feast, a half can twice daily. And dry in between. When the vet pressed on the bladder did he take a urine sample? This must be done. Never let it get to the point to where a cat frequents te litter box or ends up laying down in it or near it, by then it could be too late. Hurry. Good Luck and God Bless. P.S Vets dont hurt the cat when they press on the bladder, they know where to press. Sometimes they do this to try to get a urine sample. If there are bladder crystalys, then this must be taken care of and right now. Anyone who has had a urinary or bladder infection knows how painful it is and for a cat especially a male, it is deadly.

DO NOT TRY TO PALPATE HIS BLADDER!!!!! By pressing to hard you can rupture his bladder if you do not know what you are doing!! If you think he is blocked take him to the vet ASAP! Yes this can be a major emergency. You should have him on a special diet that takes care of his body forming crystals. Ask the vet when your there!! GO NOW!!

He may have a urainary tract infection. This may cause the cat discomfort and they tend to urinate in areas other than their litter box. Try taking him to a vet to get him checked out. Also he may feel uneasy (maybe about a recent move, or even rearanging the house) and this can cause cats to urinate in strange places too. In any even you still will want to take your kitty to a vet and make sure he's not in pain. Good luck! On another note, If your closet smells a certin way, for instance you throw all your dirty clothes in ther, he may be urinating because of a specific smell. Try using urinater elimonator and then spaying your closet floor down with frebreeze! Cats are odd creatures!

i am not a vet or anything but i know that it is common for male cats to have urinary tract problems. if he is having problems urinating then i would take him to a vet right away. if you have a 24 hr emergency vet in your area you could always call there first to see what they suggest if you describe the problem to them on the phone. i have 2 male kitties myself and never hesitate about calling the vet if i have concerns. i'd rather do that and get medical help for my boys if they need it as soon as possible rather than wait. hopefully there is nothing majorly wrong with your kitty but at least having him checked will alleviate any worries. good luck

If his urinary tract is blocked, the severity of the situation (of just that situation--there could be other things going on) depends on how long it's been since he's peed. I would say, if you're concerned, call an emergency vet and discuss it with them. Better safe than sorry. At the very minimum, you'll want to call your vet first thing in the morning.

My male cat had this problem also. According to my vet, it could indeed be life threatening, and I would call the office immediately. Antibiotics in the short term and a lifelong special diet low in ash kept these attacks to a minimum. Anyone who says diet does not matter is not being truthful. We fed ours Purina UR, available at the vets.Hope kitty is ok.

It's not an emergency, but it's urgent. First thing in the morning call your vet and get an appointment for today.

The pressing on the abdominal area to empty the bladder won't hurt your cat. Cats don't like it, but it doesn't hurt. Cats don't like taking pills either, but it's necessary sometimes.

it is an emergency situation...if you have him stand as normal and you feel down under him between his legs and you feel something large (like a baseball) and hard then he is blocked and he needs to be relieved asap...also I swear by the purina one for urinary tract health for after you get the problem fixed once i put my little guy on it i dont have these problems any more
