Medication, is not the answer for depression, induced by psychological or emotional trauma. It will only mask the symptoms, in the short term, and ultimately delay your recovery.
However, if you have been on anti-depressants for some time, there may be withdrawal. Therefore, it is essential you make an informed decision, under the supervision of a physician. I would not simply discontinue the medication on my own.

The idea of refusing anti-depressants is individual preference. It depends on why you need the medication, if you have a chemical imbalance then yes I think you should take the meds. No one should have to walk around feeling miserable if they do not have to. Depression is like anything else if it is not dealt with properly it will get worse and worse. It is perfectly normal to be concerned about having to rely on medication. When it comes down to it your mind and body are really all in one, and I doubt seriously you would enjoy walking around with a physical pain. Everything takes its toll on your body eventually, and depression is very stressful to the body, to you, and everyone around. Believe me I know, I felt the same way about having to rely on medicine, but then I thought to heck with it, I am sure there are people out there that wish that a anti-depressant was all they had to worry taking. Discussion your concerns with you doctor, or minister, or who ever you trust to advise you on the matter. I would not call it being ignorant and selfish, I just call it being concerned. As far as a form of suicide, other than if you intend for it to be form of suicide. If you do not care rather or not you live or die then yes it may be considered a form of suicide. If you want to keep on living, but you do not want to rely on medications than no I do not think its a form of suicide.

Why is is people will take medications to control epilepsy, heart disease, hormone imbalances, headaches, chronic pain etc to keep their body well. These meds help the user tolive a stable and healthy life.Yet somehow perceive taking meds for depression as some form of weakness.Anti dpressants are used to give you back control of your life .The meds bring stability into your life. The alternative to not taking the meds is that the depression will take over your life and will control your life.Wouldn't you prefer that you control the depression through meds than let depression control you. You can not will yourself to "get over" being depressed. You,and only you, can decide how you want to live your life.

It all depends on what state of mind you are in. Are you feeling suicidal? Is anything you are doing helping? What is the diagnosis? I dont know where you live but where I come from if it is an absolute thing that a person needs meds and is refusing them the courts can get involved and make you take them.

that depends on you. how much depression do you have. that is one thing to ask yourself and another is how long have you been dealing with it. do you feel suicidal at times? there are a lot of things to consider. antidepressants don't make you happy. they just help with the chemicals in your brain that aren't working and they make you feel better. if you feel that you don't need them then you can try to go without them but if things get worse then i would say to get on them and talk to a therapist and see what they say. you also don't have to be on meds always for the rest of your life. so just try to get the info on the depression that you have and make an informed decision. hope this helps

no i don't think you should be forced to take medicine. I think its better to "talk it out" and fixing your problems without the help of medicine because you never know what side-effects it can give. But, anti-depressants can help if it's really severe, but make sure to talk to your doctor about it.
-Try to exercise more, eat right, and everyday you wake up, think of at least one positive about yourself. Take walks outside with a really close family member or friend and tell them everything. Admire the beauty of the world.
And if negative thougts come in your mind, say NO!
When you're stressed, just keep in mind that it will pass, and God has just given you an obstacle in life to see if you can handle it. Write a diary, do something you love. I hope my advice helps.

no i agree with you. i have faced many tough times in my life, and have been right down to the depths of depression. but the human psyche is an amazingly strong thing. i have come through without the help of anti depressants and am now a stronger person for it.

I think antidepressants are far over-prescribed. People and doctors nowadays are unwilling to commit the time and effort to work things through on their own. Look back 40 years. They didn't have anti-depressants and they worked through their problems. Commit to yourself, talk to someone and you'll work it through as well.

There is a viable alternative in the section on depression treatments/resources at http://www.ezy-build.net.nz/~shaneris on page 2. Antidepressant use is not advocated there.
