if not, you should. Just a note -

when buying a dog or a pup, it doesnt matter where you buy it from - petshop or breeder. apart from asking the age and health of the pups, what you need to do is ask the seller about the pups AND their parents medical history AND ask for their vets phone number (otherwise they can just lie about the history).
If they wont give it to you, then they probably have something to hide and you shouldnt buy pups from them.
if their pups and parents are healthy, immunised and have no obvious genetic problems, they will not have a problem with giving you their medical history or with you talking to their vet.
a registered dog means nothing in regard to general AND genetic health.

carrie - No, not all petshops do the wrong thing, and not all breeders are reputable. no matter where you get a pup from, there are questions that need to be asked and things you need to know.

Don't settle for a vet check, all that does is say the dogs appear healthy...at that moment in time. The vet doesn't actually screen for anything either. Find out what testing is recommended for that particular breed and make sure the breeder has his/her dogs tested. Contact the breed club and/or the OFA for more information on what should be done. Many conditions don't show up for weeks, months or even years...better safe, than sorry!

It is a good thing that you posted something about this subject. In response to your question, when I got my great dane puppy I asked all those types of questions and got a copy of his parents and grandparents lineage.

I came back through looking at the answers and wanted to add that I called a few vets and talked to another Dane owner BEFORE I got my dane and did all the research I think of AND visited him several times BEFORE I brought him just so I would have a farely good idea what I was getting into getting a dane, and I do not regret the decision at all.
RAILROADER 454, that's a nice looking dane that you have there. Mine is a male fawn named Bigfoot, he's 5 and 1/2 months old.

I agree with you.

Raspberryswirrrl, are you aware there's been a lot of talk about you on here lately? People are questioning whether you're really a vet or not! I stuck up for you, but I've since become suspicious since I've noticed you can't even spell veterinarian. It's also very obvious that you've got 3 different accounts that you're using to boost your best answer percentage.

Just a heads up, I'd be taking steps to clear my name if I were you - you may be noticing the amount of thumbs downs you've got for perfectly intelligent answers lately.

MAMALADY! i got a great dane too!!!
yes, i dont think it occurs to people to ask about health and background alot, when looking for a pup. Max's breeder had all info readily available and he also has a health guarantee untill 2 years. it's sad families get atached to their new puppy only to find out that it has hip displacia, is deaf, or blind.

Your going to get alot of responses on this one. First, NEVER buy a pup froma pet shop. They but from puppy mills and that leads to disaster when it comes to health. Anytime you buy a puppy but froma reputable breeder that breeds healthy animals. Always ask for a vet certificate before you buy. If they say that they haven't taken the puppy then look elsewhere

German Shepherds can fee any the position from about $250 for a canines from a back backyard breeder, to $one thousand for a good quility canines. There are a number of German Shepherd Rescues in our area. look into geting one from there.
