wash it with warm water then rinse at the end with cold water so that the cuticles will close and lock in moisture which promotes healthier hair.
also, your dad's hair loss may be caused by hormonal (too much testosterone) and genetic (inherited) reasons. the best way is to treat it as soon as possible before it's too late (when the follicles permanently die). a prescription of pill + prescriptive strength rogaine should tremendously help (a small hassle everyday, but worth it).
my boyfriend was having the same situation 6 months ago and after being on the prescription all of the lost hair grew back and now it looks fantastic. catching it early and treating it asap is the key. hope this helps, if you need the specific pill name to ask his physician about please let me know!!

Wash with warm water, then do a quick shot of cold water over all your hair... this will help close the hair follicles and aid in preventing the existing hair from breaking off.

Wash first with warm water to disolve and remove the oils and buildup off the scalp then rinse with cold. Cold water makes hair scales lie flat making them stronger.

first wash your head with cold water to open the pores. then put shampoo on. since your pores are open it cleans them and then
rinse off the shampoo with cold water so the pores close again.
