I've got the exact same tattoo- color and all on my back- see pic. This nautical design of old has become trendy. I got mine to commemorate 6 years of commercial fishing in Alaska. I like the nautical star, but make sure it has personal meaning for you and you're not just getting in because old school ink is back in vogue.

I'd seriously advise you to get it as a temporary first: so that you live with it for a few weeks. If, at the end of that time, you still like it, go for it. Obviously, it will cost you a bit more than not getting a temp would, but, if it saves you an expensive mistake (tattoo removal costs several thousand dollars, it generally leaves scars, and from what I have heard, it hurts more than getting the tattoo in the first place), then it's money well spent.

You might also like to take a photograph of your torso, and then, working very carefully, draw in the design, and see how it looks. (You can do all sorts of fun things with the "paintbrush" program on your computer.)

If you decide that it doesn't look so good after all, start thinking about some other idea.

For myself, I don't much like the idea of such a large, solid design: I feel that the skin that is left uncoloured is as important a part of the design as the skin that is coloured. Still, that's me, and you may feel differently.

I think that if you are going to get a tattoo that it should hold some sort of meaning for you.

In this case, it doesn't really matter what the tattoo looks like, so much that it means something significant to you, and that you feel the image properly represents that meaning well (again, to you).

If this "star" has no meaning, other than asthetic value, then perhaps you might want to reconsider.

Remember, short of laser surgery, it will be forever.

Think about how you will feel about it when you are 80 years old. Will it be something you are proud of? Will it bring back some special memory?

If it does have some deeper meaning, then perhaps you could share that with us, and get a more fair evaluation of how others could perceive this in relationship to the meaning you have assigned to it.

Whatever you decide, good luck! :)

Lecture time (sorry)

Way back when (in the 80s) when I first joined the military, I thought a tattoo would be cool. Somewhere along the way, EVERYONE got them. (I didn't) So now, my rule of thumb is: Would you like that tattoo when you have wrinkles & saggy skin? Just think about that. If the answer is "yes" go for whatever you want.

i think the design is a little overrated, but if it means something to you, then go for it. your the one who will have it the rest of your life. just be sure its not the trend your following.
