The recipe I used is one that uses salt, honey, light brown sugar, butter and marshmallows. My girlfriend and I are having an argument of whether it's a side dish or a desert.

This specific recipe is traditionally considered a side dish, usually at a holiday such as Thanksgiving. However, there are other recipes that call for sweet potatoes that are considered a dessert, for example: sweet potatoe pie. I say eat the dish whenever you want because it's delicious.

Mostly a side to the meal being a vegetable and all. I guess if it is the main ingredient of a dessert then it can also be a dessert. But if you're talking about sweet potato as is, then it is a side dish just like pumpkin.

Most sweet potato recipes are considered side dishes except for sweet potato pie. There is no reason not to use sweet potatoes as a dessert though.

What you specifically described is a side dish, not a dessert, but sweet potatoes are desserts a lot of the time.

I stick with low-carb, so I avoid sweet potatoes. The single largest problem Americans have with their diets, is to intake too much carbohydrates. I've learned to be very careful with carbs, and my doctor is overwhelmed by how healthy I am at my age. I learned this from a friend who's a type-1 diabetic. It's all about diet, and it's all about avoiding carbs, and eating plenty of veggies and protien. Wake up America. Put down the bread, potatoes, and pasta. Before you kill yourself.

Depends what you serve it with. If you serve it with dinner, a meat, it is considered a side dish. If you make a pie or dish with it and serve it after dinner then it is a desert.
