I will try to be as polite as possible here: The US government has never issued a gold $100 coin of any kind. The only $100 coin the US has ever issued is the one ounce platinum bullion coin.
All US bullion coins have some representation of Liberty on them.
You may wish to go to your local library and check a coin reference book to confirm what I have just told you.
Gold is presently at $681 per ounce, so that will give you an idea of minimum value.
If a US $100 gold coin just sold on eBay, I trust that you can provide us with a link to the auction so we can all see what you are talking about. I, for one, am waiting to see it.

Without more info, all I could provide are just possibilities or guesses. US gold coins are out of the scope as there isn't any denomination of $100 in gold minted, as mentioned by your coin dealer. Your gold coin is probably one of the gold issues from the British Commonwealth countries like Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Bahamas... just to quote a few of the countries that have issued gold coins in that denomination. And these gold coins are oftenly sold at just slightly above gold bullion value. If you can recall or provide additional details here, then perhaps I could help out a little bit more. Good luck.

There is an online coin collecting forum where you can ask your questions from people who know a lot about coins. See below.
