Sorry, this is going to be a long one, but I would really appreciate your help, and if you would, please star if you have anyone in your contacts that could help me.

I also realize this is the wrong section, but I trust everyone in this section, and I respect each of your answers. Thank you for all of your time, and I will be giving thumbs-up accordingly.

I am seventeen, and a junior in high school. There has been a freshman this year that you could call a 'tagger' (someone who just hangs around, even though no one is actually close to them). He has liked every girlfriend I have had this year, except for my current one. This may be because he is still hung up on my last ex. He is crazy for her, even though it is an immature crush. Everything has been blown out of the water, though because he is bipolar. Let's start with my first girlfriend of the year. After I started going out with her, he started to like her.

Then one night after a football game (on the bus on the way back to school) we were making out, and then he comes up and sees us and goes in an all-out rage. I didn't know him that well then, and didn't expect that. He grabbed her head and I grabbed his arm away and gave him a stern look, then he left and pouted, but wasn't crying. With my last one, he has told her he loved her over and over, and she has told him that she does not like him over and over, but he still pesters her. Friday, during school he was in another depressed mood (he always is in and out). This time, however, he passed me in the hall and swung his arm by my throat and made a slashing noise. Later, he told one of my friends that he was going to kill her. She told a principle, but as far as I know, nothing has happened. At the end of the day, he was happy again, for some reason.

I have been really nice to him throughout the year, and he calls me his friend, but when he gets in his depressed mode, he blames me for his woman trouble, since I go out with the girls he likes. I have talked to his mom, because on one occasion he said he was going to kill himself, but she blew it off and said he was just being dramatic. I have been praying, but I'm not sure if I need to take any initiative or not. What do you think I should do?

Bipolar depression results in manic-depressive behaviour and is extremely dangerous, not least to the sufferer, and requires medical attention. If this guy hasn't been prescribed medication, he needs to do so and urgently. If he refuses to see a doctor you need to distance yourself from him.

Unipolar depression shows as being low, tired, lethargic and depressed in the morning and then gradually picking up and feeling better as the day progresses. All it needs is sympathy, antidepressants and encouragement. Bipolar depression is much more serious. If you care for this guy, try to get him to seek professional help, but don't put yourself in danger. I hope he will get the help he needs.

Please for your own sake, stay away from him. If he's acting that way, he's not taking his medication and is capable of anything. You cannot reason with a crazy person, their minds don't operate the same as yours. His moods are erratic because that is the nature of the disease. He could live a fairly normal life with medication, but bipolars usually don't like to take their meds because of the side effects....one is that some tend to sleep a lot. I know 2 bipolar people, and it is the same with both. They can be rather intrusive in your life if they attach to you which would be ok if they were in control through meds. But, like I said, it's typical that they aren't. You are too young to be dealing with this and your parents, or a school counselor, or your friend's parents should get involved. Insist on adult help with this person and don't feel guilty for shunning your relationship. You have to take care of yourself and your girlfriend in this instance. His parents should be more involved in what he's doing, as should his doctor.

Thanks for trusting us. I know you'll get a few asses but for the most part the community here really cares.

I think that you have every right to be concerned. You are motivated not out of selfish things, but for concern for your friend. I think you were right to try to contact an adult by speaking to his mom. Unfortunately, she's in denial.

I really think you need to contact one more adult about this. Your high school guidence counsellor. If he/she is a tool, then contact a trusted teacher. If you're uncomfortable speaking about it, write a letter and drop it off to them. Some of the behavior is dangerous. Even if he's "just kidding" or whatever excuse he wants to give, this kid COULD be dangerous. And he is NOT happy. He needs help. With help he'll be able to live a happier life.

Please contact people at your school and good for you for being concerned enough about your friend to post this.

People with Bipolar disorder can be very moody and unpredictable, and often need therapy and medication to keep them "level". I would try talking to his Mother again, or tell your parents and have them talk to her and find out if he is getting any treatment.
I would take it seriously, because bipolar disorder is a serious disorder. I'm not saying he will act on any of the things he says he will do, but even threatening people is a serious thing in my opinion.
