I had constant tinnitus caused by a surgical procedure. It finally dissipated after several months but I felt like I was listening to people through a glass of water.
Loud noise effects your ear drums and unfortunately it does do damage if your ears are constantly barraged by loud noise and high decibels.

Check out the Mayo Clinic's Website for further information.
Good Luck

You might not like this answer because it will take work to do what I think you need to do. It will perhaps go away over time IF you get medical attention. You might need to find the cause (examples: an ear infection, the use of certain drugs, a blocked auditory tube or canal, or a head injury) by a good ear, nose, and throat specialist and then seek the best treatment. I need to do this sort of thing as well for problems I have had but I don't know whom to see. Must spend time investigating. Wish me luck and good luck to you.

I have had tinnitus for 4 or 5 years, it doesn't get any better, actually it has gotten worse, ring, ring, ring around the clock, sometimes it just drives me crazy.
